Snowden documents reveal 'China stole plans for Australia’s F-35 fighter jet to be used by US allies

Chinese spies stole key design information about the F-35 Lightning II multi-role fighter – set to be used by the air forces of Australia, Japan and other United States allies, say documents disclosed by former American intelligence contractor Edward Snowden.

New disclosures published by German magazine Der Spiegel, claim that Chinese cyber spies stole huge volumes of sensitive military information.

It said a top-secret US National Security Agency (NSA) presentation stated that “many terabytes of data” were stolen about the fighter, including details of its radar systems used to identify and track targets.

It is understood the main data breach took place at the prime contractor, Lockheed Martin, in 2007, before orders for the F-35 Lightning II placed by Australia and Japan.

Both countries have already selected the F-35 Lightning II as the next-generation fighter for their air forces.

Japan has 42 of them on order, while Australia plans to buy 72.

The Sydney Morning Herald, which reported the disclosures today, said that although it had been previously alleged that the joint strike fighter had been a target of Chinese cyber-espionage, the Snowden documents provided the first public confirmation of how much the highly sensitive data had been compromised.

The newspaper said the leaked NSA briefings confirmed that Australia had been informed of the “serious damage” caused by Chinese cyber-espionage relating to development of the F-35.

However, it noted that in June 2013, Frank Kendall, the chief of acquisitions at the US Defence Department, told a US Senate hearing that he was “reasonably confident” that such classified information was now well protected.

The stolen information also included detailed engine schematics, methods for cooling exhaust gases, and “aft-deck heating contour maps”.

Military aviation experts have speculated that the design of China’s new ‘fifth-generation” fighters – the Chengdu J-20 and the Shenyang J-31 – have been extensively influenced by design information stolen from the US, the report said.

and for putin, snowden can only brind what he had in stock by working at the nsa, apparently they had better things to do than spying on putin or russia.

you can find plenty of anti putin to fill your need in your daily news... just avoid fox news, they are quite good on disinformation.

thats a good question but its quite obvious from the reluctance of the USA to give back their gold to countries that should have some there.

it has to have been stolen, they cant have spent the money that did not belong to them, they are not like that...

anyway, that snowden info about china is quite annoying, USA will have to take measure against china, like some ban of their products or to do business with china as they cant accept such a thing to happen.

but don't know why, i have a feeling nothing will happen!

i think we will agree on this, it's quite obvious putin help snowden to choose that peticuliar information (until now most of info leak (at least those i have heard of) was USA doing doing things to their own citizen or other country, this one is very different)
