steven36
Hackers have published confidential data of Swiss bank customers on the internet. Some 30,000 email messages between the state-owned Banque Cantonale de Geneve (BCGE) and its customers were made public last week after the bank refused to pay a ransom to the criminal gang, Tech Week Europe reported. The perpetrators managed to hack the bank and intercept 30,192 emails concerning both Swiss and foreign customers. Last week, they demanded a €10,000 (£7,800) ransom from BCGE, threatening to release the data if those demands were not met. When the bank declined to pay up, the hackers used a Twitter account under the name of 'Rex Mundi' to announce the breach. They tweeted last Friday: "We would like to wish a merry tax audit to all the non-Swiss account holders listed in the BCGE files."Confirming the attack, BCGE said that no internal systems or accounts had been compromised. The hack was limited to public-facing servers, the bank reassured customers."At first analysis, this information is hardly critical, is obsolete or corresponds to foreseen contents about which it has already informed a significant number of clients concerned," said BCGE in a statement.Switzerland is well known for being a tax haven, and BCGE is one of many banks in the country to participate in a legitimate government-brokered programme to assist wealthy foreigners to avoid paying tax. funkyy
Probably the same "wealthy foreigners" who look down their noses at decent, honest, hard-working people the sweat off whose backs has made them wealthy to begin with; and probably the same creatures who pontificate over the evils of "internet piracy". The bank's statement is so "nothing happening here, move on please", bet they're really worried though.Hell hath no fury like a hacker scorned.
