The worlds number 4 torrent website is down following a massive Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack by unknown hackers. The website seems to have been down for 23 hours and seems to come online for little bit before throwing up a 503 service error.

The Extratorrent admin took to Twitter to tell its fans about the DDoS attack

Extratorrent is under the DDoS attack by hackers right now. Please, keep your patience. We ll try to fix the issues. We'll be back shortly!

About Extratorrent

ExtraTorrent was one of the more popular torrent websites in 2014. It has grown in size due to more traffic and has moved up again in the top 10, now placed as the 4th most-visited torrent site by torrent ranking websites. This success didn’t go unnoticed by rightsholders groups such as the MPAA who recently called out ExtraTorrent as one of the top pirate sites. The site was forced to trade in its .com domain for .cc this year, after it was suspended by its domain registrar.

The Isitdownrightnow says that Extratorrent has been down for past 23 hours (now it says 4 minutes because the website sprang to live for few seconds before going down again

While the admin says that its a DDoS attack by unknown hackers, the actual reason may be a takedown by authorities or a revenge DDoS by the music and movie companies. Earlier Sony had allegedly undertaken a similar kind of DoS attacks to stop the torrents sites from sharing the files from the massive hack attack.

Reader may note that only two days back around 13 mega Hollywood movie screener versions were leaked and being shared on torrent websites. These movies are considered to be prime Oscar award contenders and it is though that one of the guild members or his/her associates may have leaked these screener versions.

This is a developing story and we will keep you updated.

UPDATE..We are facing some servers problems and site can be offline sometimes. But we will fix all before jan 13th.Thanks

Doubt it screeners leak every year . The Gambler 2014 , A Most Violent Year 2014 , American Sniper better quality prints just came out of these today and a good print of a new one Cake 2014 all out today so seems to really have no bearing on whats leaks out . On weekends always DDoS attacks be worse plus sites be over crowded because everyone be home downloading . Extratorrent had problems with there site when TPB shut down as well because they could not handle all the new traffic . Seems they need to upgrade there servers and get some good anti DDoS protection Anywho, the site is working for me right now

Moving along.

The Pirate Bay along with the others were takedown to prevent filesharing during the holiday season. The upcoming Academy Awards, and the Golden Globe Awards is the reason why ExtraTorrent is offline now. The movie, and tv torrents are always the most popular downloads on that site.

The Powers That Be are turning the Hydra analogue against us. Instead of severing one head, they are going to decapitate them all in one fell swoop is their strategy. Strike quick before the beast regains it's strength. They didn't move fast enough.

Removing sites only promotes piracy.

Its not offline its been up and running every since this post was made .. it was offline 23 hrs or so but not no more . I been file sharing since 2001 back when everything was done within a client before you needed to to go on websites to even get files. Now days most sites go offline from time to time because of stuff like ddos regradless if its sceener season are not.

It must have just came back on. Because all I got earlier was snapshot. I have been sharing files, movies, and tv shows since the 1980's. The internet has only made it easier. Now I don't have to go out in the cold. Screener seasons is more accurate. Summer movies, and fall tv shows count too.

Im over on there site now , the only thing was said by the admin was

We are facing some servers problems and site can be offline sometimes.

But we will fix all before jan 13th.

Thanks

ExtraTorrent Down After Huge DDoS Attack

ExtraTorrent, one of the largest torrent sites on the Internet, remains down following a huge DDoS attack. The site's operators are working hard to mitigate the assault and hope to have the site back online soon.

With The Pirate Bay down and possibly out, millions of file-sharers around the world are turning to alternative sources for their content.

The current top 10 torrent sites in the world are the largest beneficiaries in terms of traffic but with that comes additional attention.

One of those sites is ExtraTorrent, an index that has moved up the rankings in recent years to become a torrent scene front runner. Last year the site took the #4 position overall and with an impressive Alexa rank of 356, now sits at #3.

But despite the achievements, progress has now temporarily ground to a halt. On January 10 the site went down unexpectedly, with an all-too-familiar announcement delivered shortly after.

“Extratorrent is under DDoS attack by hackers right now. Please, keep your patience. We’ll try to fix the issues. We’ll be back shortly!” the site announced on Twitter.

Indeed, that very same day the site did return but the comeback was brief, with the admins reporting “issues” getting the index functioning again.

Early Monday the site’s operators announced that while server problems could continue, everything was on course to be fixed before January 13. But with less than a day to go, attacks against the site persist.

“ExtraTorrent still is under DDoS attack. It’s very powerful DDoS attack,” the site reported a few minutes ago.

“Our hosting provider tries to solve the issues. We hope to back soon!”

At the time of writing ExtraTorrent is available in some regions intermittently.

Since when is DDoS hacking, even Anonymous explains it is not. You don't need any talent or knowledge for it, LMAO.

You could call them disturber, saboteur, protester or whatever but not hacker. I'm pretty sure it's a slap into the face and direct offense to those that really hack (into) things and think DDoS is more kids stuff.

Or do we call someone hacker because he slap's wood with an axe? :P
