Over the weekend a new build of Windows 10 leaked to the web. Build 9901 brings some pretty significant changes, and our own Paul Thurrott took the weekend to install it in a VM to get a good hands-on look.

After reading about Paul's experience with the new build, you might be enticed to try it out yourself. Paul made the right move by installing it to a VM because according to the Windows Insider chief, Gabriel Aul, there's a bug in the flighting (updating) mechanism that will keep you from being able to update to new builds when available.

@ZacB_ Yes, but not punitively. There is a bug in 9901 that breaks flighting, you'll need to upgrade through ISO.

I think you'll find that the link Donkey-girl posted is about the actual leak of 9901, this post is about a bug in 9901 which stops you upgrading so not a dupe at all, there is no mention in the 9901 leak thread of an upgrade bug, as there wouldn't be. So this not old news.

Oh and just to confirm, I read all 3 pages of the 9901 leak thread, and yep there is no mention of an upgrade bug.

However back on topic, tbh I'm not too fussed if there's an upgrade bug (these are test builds and not RTM), I would only every upgrade from an ISO, aka clean install, never do what M$ are saying and do an inflight upgrade from either a leak build or an win 7 install.

Perhaps somehow someone read something a little too quickly.

Microsoft came out with an update for current build 9879 today to allow it to be updated in the future.

"This update includes improvements to Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 9879 that will let members of the Windows Insider Program continue to receive future released builds of Technical Preview. " http://support.microsoft.com/kb/3025380
