Ok, so I gave it another try.

First, I couldn't install Nero Burning Rom Standalone, it refuses to install, because of an expired serial. even though I did use the patch to clean trial marks (which obviously didn't work)

Next, I tried platinum v 16.0.04200 and installed using the serial provided in the readme (the default serial was rejected). It installed fine, then I applied the patch and it *seems* to work (no nero has been modified message), but I can't know for sure until I burn a disc (haven't done it yet).
