Windows 8.1 has now reached 10.95pc of internet users, overtaking XP for the first time, according to new figures from StatCounter Global Stats

From Silicon Republic:

Windows 8.1 is now on 10.95pc of devices accessing the internet, just narrowly ahead of XP which is at 10.69pc.

The most popular operating system remains Windows 7, which is on 50.3pc of computers accessing the internet.

Following a somewhat mixed reaction to Windows 8, Windows 8.1 has made steady progress since its launch, said Aodhan Cullen, CEO, StatCounter.

I'd bet more PCs still run Windows 98 than Windows 8.1...

But the key words above are "internet users"

No doubt most point of sale terminals still run older versions of Windows. They will not (or should not) be characterized in the "internet users" class either (for security reasons, as we all saw with Target for example -- if only you had patched your machines dummies).

Target uses Linux for their card readers now, i think they had XP before.. but it's not surprising that people are abandoning XP. I had W98 around 6-11 months after MS dropped support for that before i upgraded that PC to XP. Sadly now, that PC is not worth using, even with Linux. Or at least i haven't gotten it to work without it giving me some problems.

More than likely d00d's and doodette's putters gone belly up and they purchased a new one with an o.e.m.

M$ seems to hold people to ransom.

They seem forced to upgrade every few years, when they're happy with what they have.

Bit like messenger, whom the hell wants Skype!

Skype was acquired from a company that was heavily criticised by M$ for producing two versions, freeware and paid for versions of file sharing apps that cost software makers and the music and film

industry billions.

M$ should give us what we want not the other way around!

This was inevitable - most people were bound to drop XP sooner or later.

Windows 8.1 too, shall suffer the same fate as XP - new OS releases are the order of the day (gone is the age of service-packs.)

Next on M$ hitlist - Windows 7. But here Windows 8.1 will fail, may be Windows 10 would succeed when ready as RTM.

That's why i am going Linux. More than likely though i'll be getting W10 if W7 no longer function well enough but the nice thing is i can use W7 virtually under Linux so i'd still be secured. With that being said, it's nice having multiple PCs, one for Linux and the other for Windows :)
