smallhagrid
I prefer to watch youtube vids outside of the browser using a media player instead.Since I don't watch movies or anything fancy 360P is good enough for me.That having been said=>I've tried just about every media player around over time & switched players now & then when they get fussy as YT makes changes.Lately I've been using Light Alloy via SVPTube and it works...mostly.Some vids just fail though & when that happens I try a few other players to see what may work.Generally a few will open the stream OK - but usually with no picture. So I ask=>Is there a particular CODEC that works best for the video of YT vids that may fix the no picture thing for me ??Thanks. rahulgi
@smallhagridthe simple answer is Klite codec, media player classic bundledownload here, standard is more than enoughFor grabbing video from youtube, I use flashgot extension(firefox)after installing flashgot remember to change the annoying right click menu itemsusing flashgot (media button> right click) you can choose the avaliable formatsyou can use free download manager (lite edition is enough)change flashgot media option to suite your download manager, you can also use 'build in'change number of instances of connection to 1 for watching video, as soon as download start(say ~2%)you can also use the 'free download manager' build-in media preview, just to make sure you grab the right videoThe best part of video grabbing is you can save a copy for later viewing, on computer,phone/tablet (mp4 is best for non pc)Hope this helps :)Edit:Please uninstall all those junkie players before installing the codec to avoid any conflictsFree download manager, klite/media player classic combo is the least resource hogging(since I am expecting comments about IDM)
smallhagrid
Yes:Ubuntu/LXDE/XP in a VM?Or even straight-up XP as I've got that on my old NB...Just FYI:Any OS for me that is newer than XP will be Linux based. That is=>until/unless I make peace with 7 somehow - but I haven't had the time to devote to doing that yet.Too much about 7 as it comes that is simply intolerable to my sensibilities. To make it acceptable will mean searching out solutions.(I already know some solutions for it do not even exist - like making XP-style explorer its default file manager without using a 3rd party substitute...)Thanks for replying Joe13. smallhagrid
Ummmm...:adobe flash playerI use ONLY portable browsers and have not installed ANYTHING by adooobe in some years - its very bad stuff as I'm sure you know. Also, as stated in my OP - I am asking about viewing yt vids OUTSIDE the browser & already do this, but with some exceptions.Interesting Mammut:you can play youtube videos with old version Masstube+flash player for IEThanks...I have looked at their site (http://www.masstube.cl/) and it says: "MassTube is a lightweight and popular application to quicky download videos from YouTube."Just the single page - no forum or further info is shown which is like what you are suggesting here.If it did (or still does...) more than that it is hidden someplace - so please - more info if there is any about this ??(Also=> I never use IE for anything & have it blocked in my FW permanently.)And...:Thanks Rahulgi, for your very nice efforts in replying to my query. Some related info to your reply - hopefully to make this a bit clearer:- I do not install apps - my PC uses over 90% portable apps for just about everything.- Mostly I use XP/SP2, which is not a good match for newer versions of MPC.- When I want to keep anything from yt I mostly just use keepvid.com as it is updated & very simple to use.- Most anything I do keep around is just gotten as MP3s or 3GPs directly from keepvid.com .What I wish pointers about is JUST viewing yt streams OUTSIDE the browser - as in directly in some (portable...) media player. If what it takes is to trash my OS to simply watch yt vids, then I can live without them really as sitting & watching vids is not any hobby of mine - I'd rather read, really. Thanks Folks, for being so very helpful.I look forward to any more great & helpful replies here !!
