China will move to Linux by 2020 in 'de-Windowsifying' process

The Red State, which earlier this year denounced Microsoft Windows 8 as a "spyware tool" on the lunchtime news, has been developing its own flavour of Linux, based in part on an earlier attempt based on Ubuntu, called Kylin.

'NeoKylin', as the OS is understood to be called, is already due to appear on a range of Dell machines manufactured for the Chinese market.

It has now been confirmed that Professor Ni Guangnan, of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, has designed a rollout programme that has been passed by the government and will see all government servers, mainframes and individual machines being replaced.

The plan is to replace Windows-powered machines at a rate of 15 percent per year, give or take 10 percent, over five years. "We call this a de-Windowsifying movement," Ni told Chinese site Ecns.cn.

Earlier this year, Ni founded the China Information Terminal Operating System Alliance, an umbrella group of Chinese tech companies with the aim of collaborating on reducing the reliance on foreign IT infrastructure.

"At the end of the day, I expect the 15 operating systems to merge into one or two operating systems, while the rest of the developers can shift into providing other relevant services," Ni said.

The "de-Windowsifying" process comes at a time when Microsoft's Chinese operation has been subject to raids and an anti-trust investigation by the government. "Now is the most vulnerable time for Microsoft in China, and the best time for homegrown software companies to beat it," Ni said.

Microsoft in China was recently responsible for leaking the launch of Windows 9, which turned out to be hogwash, suggesting either than Redmond isn't sending the outpost the memos, or they aren't being read.

Windows 8 = Spyware?

Possibly, but I'm pretty damn sure the Chinese gov will bake it's own spyware into this OS. After all, the shepherd has to look after his sheep.

Still would like to get my mits on it and take it for a spin.

Wouldn't load it on a production machine! Just saying.

There are a lot of very clever people in china, I am sure they will discover any spyware on it and get around it, they have had a lot of practice!

Just as many clever people in China as elsewhere, but the clever (in computing) people (<1%?) will likely just avoid it and use one of the many flavours of Linux out there, that aren't supplied by their gov - rather than figure out how to bypass spyware that is likely integrated into the kernel.

But for the average user (>99%) who can do basic surfing, email etc they will probably never know.

I'm assuming the majority who are using XP don't even know that they are using a pirate copy (judging by Microsoft sales in China - more users, but only 5% of US sales), as the OS came with the machine.

the process of "shutting Windows Down" in china have must been initiated long time ago. why should a country pay millions of dollars as license fee for using when free or less costly alternative do exist. and why license fee for something that risks your data? Getting rid of windows is very difficult but not impossible. think of a person who has been consuming drugs for years and now feels impossible to get rid of it. see how Munich got rid of it and now license fee diverted to the welfare for its citizens.....not to MS.

Who gives a sh!t - in fact, neighboring countries who have been on the wrong end of China's long stick, would hope for them to to adopt Linux immediately.

There are a lot of very clever people in china, I am sure they will discover any spyware on it and get around it, they have had a lot of practice!

They also have the police hauling them off to jail for getting around there laws .Linux will be mostly for the Government were there worried about there trade and militarily secrets there worried NSA has put back doors in windows and they cant get updates for XP without paying million of doallrs like the U.S navy does to get them.

I dont get were there that smart they just clone a lot other countries technology is all because they dont have a union, labor laws and other laws like others places have . What they learned was because people from other countries went over and tech them because the rich open companies over there .

Also some in Russia trying to get windows 10 ban in government so its not just China that's worried.

Senior Russian lawmaker seeks ban on Windows 10 in state agencies

Even South Korea witch is allies with the US has looked into changing its O/S
