Satya Nadella offers brief explanation of how the company decided to skip Windows 9 and release Windows 10

The company, however, never provided a reason for its decision to skip Windows 9 and go directly to Windows 10, with many people believing that this change of heart was based on its intention to emphasize the huge improvements that it made to the operating system.

The new CEO Satya Nadella took the stage at Gartner's Symposium/ITxpo conference to discuss about Microsoft’s plans in the cloud business and also provided a very short explanation of what happened with Windows 9.

“Windows 9 just came and went”

Nadella didn’t offer too many details on how the company actually decided to go straight to Windows 10, but he did suggest that Windows 9 was just a designation for its operating system and nothing more.

“It came and went,” Nadella explained when he was asked by a Gartner analyst what happened with Windows 9.

While he didn’t provide any specifics, some people claimed that possible app compatibility issues caused by code in software solutions trying to identify the OS version could also be a reason for the jump to Windows 10. It appears that some apps could incorrectly identify Windows 9 as Windows 95, so Microsoft decided to avoid all these problems by releasing Windows 10.

Evidence of Windows 8.1 Update 2 found in Windows 10

In a surprising turn of events, despite Microsoft’s decision to rename Windows 9 to Windows 10, it appears that the operating system was initially supposed to be just a second update for Windows 8.1.

Evidence of Windows 8.1 Update 2 was found in some Windows 10 files, so it appears that Microsoft initially designed it to be just a new update for Windows 8.1, but in the end decided to provide it to users under a completely new name and as a stand-alone release.

What’s more, Microsoft’s executives confirmed at the BUILD 2014 developer conference earlier this year that some of the features currently part of Windows 10, including the Start menu and the windowed Metro apps, would arrive on a second Windows 8.1 update, thus suggesting that an update instead of a full OS preview was planned since early 2014.

All it is M$ trying to cash in on a windows update . Everything that we was suppose get for updates in windows 8.1 .. Microsoft is going to try too cash in on re branding Windows 8.1 + start menu and the windowed Metro apps . I don't use Metro apps and I have classic start menu . No wonder they say it may be free or 20$ to upgrade . :P

What is going to be more interesting about it than the fact that its just a windows update that we who purchased windows 8 should have already got. will be are they going to spend more money on upgrading the activation than they did on making it better ? Only reason they Re-Branded Windows 8.1 with a start menu as windows 10 Its due to M$ poor judgments to begin with.

Nobody is buying windows 8.1 unless they bought a new computer with windows 8x on it. There not selling many keys . And Windows 7 is still selling keys . Its got to with money is all . No businesses are going to upgrade to some windows that most of there employes want know how to operate.

Microsoft surprised everyone few weeks back by announcing that the next version of Windows will be called ‘Windows 10′, instead of the obvious ‘Windows 9′. So, what happened to Windows 9? Speaking on stage at the Dreamforce conference in San Francisco, Windows team executive Tony Prophet said, “It came and it went.”

“Windows 10 is not going to be an incremental step from Window 8.1,” he explained. “Windows 10 is going to be a material step. We’re trying to create one platform, one eco-system that unites as many of the devices from the small embedded Internet of Things, through tablets, through phones, through PCs and, ultimately, into the Xbox.”

As Satya Nadella mentioned it below, Windows 10 is not just another version of Windows. Also, Microsoft is involving users in designing their next operating system release. Recently, they released Windows 10 Technical Preview to the general public and it received over 100,000 feedback items from over million users worldwide.

“The reason we’re doing that is so we can listen to our customers,” he says, particularly enterprise users.
“Our objective with Windows 10 is … to build absolutely the best OS for the enterprise. That’s the early focus,” Prophet said. “We’ve got the process. We’ve got a million people using it. And we’re listening.”

Well right now Windows 10 is not exactly any leap forward. It is just Windows 8 in slightly changed clothing so far.

If they really want a step forward. Design a modular system with new code.
