geeteam
On Tuesday of the upcoming week, Microsoft will begin to show off its next generation operating system, code named Threshold. The OS, which many simply refer to as Windows 9, is said to get a new name but of course, Microsoft is staying quiet on subject. What will Microsoft call the new OS? Well, that is still unknown but if the company did call it Windows 9, technically, that is an entirely new name as only Windows 8 officially exists. Of course, the idea of simply calling it 'Windows' without a version number has been speculated too.It is expected that Microsoft will move away from the Windows 8 branding as that OS has not faired well with public opinion. By giving the OS a new name, it will allow them to distance themselves from the woes of the past and start fresh again in the minds of the consumer. We don't have to wait too much longer as Microsoft's event takes place on Tuesday of the upcoming week. But, if that's too long to wait, we will have a preview posted up on Monday that gives a few new details about the technical preview and what you should expect.Source

johnsnow
Have you guys seen the video previews shown from the next OS ? Don't know what good will a name change do, when there are still so many elements from the main problem - Modern UI - see the new Start Menu and it's "Live Tiles". Also the are modern apps that now co-exist, still, with the classic desktop apps- don't see a single valid point to do this since users already expressed that their desktop interface isn't a larger Smartphone OS/touch interface. So pissed with their decisions so far.

geeteam
Even Microsoft's eventual choice of name for the next Windows release is meant to help distinguish the coming OS update from Windows 8. While some inside and outside the company have been referring to Threshold as "Windows 9" during its planning stages, Windows 9 isn't necessarily the name Microsoft will use for the new OS. There have been rumors and guesses that Microsoft instead may call the next version of Windows just plain Windows or "Windows One." I've heard some speculate Microsoft might go with "Windows 365" for the new name.Myerson joked on September 26 in an email he sent to Tom Warren of The Verge and me that Microsoft still hadn't decided on the final name for Threshold. After Warren and I joked on Twitter that it might be "Windows X" (which is supposedly the placeholder name in Microsoft's collateral for Tuesday's event)zdnet
Karlston
That's brilliant! It was the NAME that made many hate Windows 8, nothing to do with their forcing of a touch UI interface on mouse/keyboard folks, or removing popular features. If only they'd thought of that BEFORE they named it Windows 8, it would have been a raging success.

If Windows 8.2 was absolute perfection nobody would try it.But if they stick too hard to their failed Metro forced stuff, they will strike out, with 3 despised releases of an OS (8, 8.1 since they treat it like a new OS, and 9/TH/Whatever stupid name they come up with).Windows 7 would have failed if they called it Vista SP3.
