locoJoe
Tony Stewart struck and killed a fellow driver (Kevin Ward Jr.) with his sprint car late Saturday night during a dirt-track race at Canandaigua (N.Y.) Motorsports Park, the Ontario County Sheriff’s Department announced early Sunday morning.<SNIP>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tlFuHsymTqQ“People that witnessed it were horrified,” Povero said of the crash. “They were extremely shocked.” You can hear the motor rev just before the car hits the driver.Tyler Graves, a sprint-car racer and friend of Ward’s, told Sporting News in a phone interview that he was sitting in the Turn 1 grandstands and saw everything.“Tony pinched him into the frontstretch wall, a racing thing,” Graves said. “The right rear tire went down, he spun on the exit of (Turn) 2. They threw the caution and everything was toned down. Kevin got out of his car. … He was throwing his arms up all over the place at Tony for most of the corner.“I know Tony could see him. I know how you can see out of these cars. When Tony got close to him, he hit the throttle. When you hit a throttle on a sprint car, the car sets sideways. It set sideways, the right rear tire hit Kevin, Kevin was sucked underneath and was stuck under it for a second or two and then it threw him about 50 yards.”Graves said he didn’t believe it was intentional.Source: nypost.com
Whelm
Pretty tragic stuff. Hopefully they have better (different angle) tape and audio to study. I think the media consensus is that it was completely accidental while the internet chatter and spectator belief is that Stewart was trying to 'dust' him and show him up but it got out of hand and he was sucked into the back tire.Poor kid was 20 (I think)
dMog
not a good idea to wear black on a dirt track an then stand in the middle of the road as spreading cars go whizzing by

dMog
like i said above...not really a wise choice to be out on a racetrack while cars are driving on it...it does not matter if the collision of cars was done on purpose....the guy who was run over had no real reason to strolling on the track looking for the guy who ran into him,,,, how many cars on that track at the time... and the drivers looking for parts of cars and other cars and the last thing on their minds needs to be oh gee i also need to be careful because someone may be out for a sunday stroll down main street during a car race
