What Tablet to get ?

Hi guys !

Need some advice .

Dad wants to get a new tablet.

He wants an iPad and i am not entirely in harmony !

Of all the concerns the biggest one is -- WiFi or Cellular .

He really does use the Whatts App messenger a lot .

So, a Wifi IPad will not be truly capable of running the app, although i did read some ways to make it run .

And more so, the App isnt officially available for the cellular model too !

This one also requires some hooks and crooks to make the Whats App run !

Similarly for the android tab too !

I like the Nexus 7, but again no Whats App for it inherently, but relying on out of the usual methods to make it run !

I dont use Whats App. and dad is not that of a geek.

So if i make the app run on his machine, i dont want him to be running into any troubles later if the hack causes any troubles , coz he will be stuck !

So, if any of you people use a tablet with an IM app, what do you recommend ?

Good if an IPad solution ! :)

Or in general , i would appreciate if any tab owners can throw some light on the possible pros and cons !

Any of the Samsung tablets with 3G plenty of them I have been running a Tab Mk 1 since they came out and love it does everything I need I just bought the Son a Tab 4 Wi Fi only as although like me Disabled he rarely goes out and when he does normally he accompanies me and doesn't normally need internet access and if he does he has his Samsung 3S

Personally IMHO anyone who buys a Ipad is a fool with money to waste and is just buying a name.

You can activate WhatsApp on an android tablet without any trouble. You just need to have a phone around to receive the code via SMS or call.

As far as I know, on iOS you need to JB to get WhatsApp running.

Both current and last generation of N7 have SIM variants, LTE for 2013 (razorg is the codename) and HSDPA for 2012. I'm pretty sure you'll be okay with Nexus 7.

I don't know what you mean by "no WhatsApp for it", but even if you can't get it from Play Store, you can grab the apk and sideload it on the device.

I personally recommend the Nexus 7 , while some say it feels pretty cheap to hold, I disagree.

Anyway, if you can't get a Nexus 7 because it's too rare, I recommend the LTE variant of SG Tab S 8.4.

Only Apple device and I'm sure that you can fix Whats App to run on iPad (JB or not)

hmmm....

Not certain buddy !

Dad seen the iPad Air and likes it, and so is favored for it .

WhatsApp does not run by default on the iPad.

Googling showed some ways of making it to run w/o JB, and the Local Apple store at my place also acknowledges that it runs w/o JB will give troubles.

For WhatsApp to run easy, the iPad needs to be jailbroken !

And that they will Jailbreak it right at my purchase if i want it !!!

Buying a name ! I know man, but thats how things go !

So, your Samsung 3G tab also features calling ?

I mean is it 3G only for cellular network support or also for making calls as well !

You can activate WhatsApp on an android tablet without any trouble. You just need to have a phone around to receive the code via SMS or call.

As far as I know, on iOS you need to JB to get WhatsApp running.

Even if we get a 3G or 4G enabled Tab, do we still need a mobile phone ?

the only thing wrong with ipads are they have no sd card slot and they don't support..flash because of this. when my ipad dies...it will be replaced with something other than an apple product

I know man .

But, as i said, dad saw the Air and just like the whole feel of it and so.........

And, now he wants me to find and sort out the issues !

Howdy friend.

How r u . Long time !

So the Galaxy Tab S is the new one that has been launched ?

And does it support cellular and calling features too ?

If i go for the Galaxy tab S , does it has any issues with any apps , esp WhatsApp ?

Yeah , a MS tablet ! :D

Similarly for the android tab too !

So, again the LTE version for Nexus 7 should work like a regular phone ?

Right ?

With no issues in any apps !

. WhatsApp does not support tablets . So, i ask !

I have MS Surface - love it.

MS Surface is simple out of the question ! :nono:

1. Not quite likely. The software loaded on Nexus 7 doesn't contain anything for "dialing" and doesn't recieve calls. But other than that, yes. it includes all the modems that are in average phones with LTE now. And since it's open by its nature, loading an AOSP-based software on it to make it a phone hybrid shouldn't be that hard.

And about WhatsApp not supporting tablets .... erm ... This is the first time I hear about it. Not a power user. But I'm pretty sure you can sideload it, no matter what. Working or not might need questioning in someplace more dedicated ... like the general discussion section of XDA or a sub-reddit on Reddit.

Yeah i know man, anything can be done around with an Android !

From all the various models and versions of Android i have been using right from the older Nexus to Notes to newer Nexus, i think i know my way around a lil with the androids !

I just want a solid solution with the tablet and the WhatsApp that should just work as it will be used by dad.

From what i now understand, any tablet with a cellular calling support should be able to run WhatsApp !

Asus Transforme book T100

Naa..

this wont serve the purpose !

And good luck for your Osteo . Take meds and stay healthy ! )

+1 for Samsung Galaxy Tablets! ;)

Samsung launched the new Galaxy Tab S and from the review videos , the display in it is brilliant !

Launched but not yet on retail sale. Only available through online Samsung store. Should hit the market soon . Lets see !

I must admit I have been tempted to upgrade with the new Tab S but still waiting to see if they bring out a 7 inch OK yes I could manage a 8.4 but that is starting to get silly as a handheld device even with my hands plus I don't think they have released a 3G / 4G version yet in the UK

WhatsApp is not supported on iPad, regardless of cellular or Wi-Fi. There are ways to install WhatsApp, but you need to jailbreak your iPad to make it work (Whatspad from Cydia).

Similarly for the android tab too !

WhatsApp on Android tablets work just fine. I've been using it on my Nexus 7 (2013) without any issues. WhatsApp runs perfectly as it does on phone and there are no unusual methods to make it work. You don't need to root your device or go through any other hassle. Get WhatsApp APK file and install it manually on your Nexus (you need to allow unknown sources on Settings > Security for manual installation). Its that simple.

I dont use Whats App. and dad is not that of a geek.

So if i make the app run on his machine, i dont want him to be running into any troubles later if the hack causes any troubles , coz he will be stuck !

WhatsApp will work perfectly on Nexus 7, no troubles or hacks, etc. Install and use, you'll need your phone to verify though.
So, if any of you people use a tablet with an IM app, what do you recommend ?
WhatsApp (since most of my friends use it). Other than that, Threema, and Trillian.
Good if an IPad solution !

Unfortunately, WhatsApp is not supported on iPads. You'll need to jailbreak the device to make it work. Installing WhatsApp from other sources (Tongbu, Kuaiyong, etc.) will not work either. As far as I know, there's no WhatsApp solution for iPad.

Or in general , i would appreciate if any tab owners can throw some light on the possible pros and cons !

I own and use both iPad 3 and Nexus 7 (2013). I'm planning to sell my iPad and use Nexus 7 as my main tablet.

iPad:

+ Great apps that are iOS exclusive (Marvin, PDF Expert, iStudiez, etc.)

+ Longer battery life

+ Good camera

+ iTunes

+ High resolution display (than Nexus 7)

- No WhatsApp support (jailbreak required)

- No file manager

- Limited media format support

Nexus 7:

+ WhatsApp support

+ Android OS (great for personalization, lots of keyboards, themes, Custom ROMs, kernels etc.)

+ Sharpest tablet screen in the market (323 ppi)

+ Lightweight and can be held in one hand (feels great in hand)

+ Most apps 'designed for phones' work perfectly well on tablet. No up-sizing required.

+ Great stereo sound

+ System wide file manager

+ Plays about almost every movie/music format there is (MX Player)

- Battery life isn't long enough compared to iPad (unless you use Custom ROMs and kernels which increase battery life dramatically)

- Camera isn't great.

The list isn't objective or exhaustive, just what I could think of at the moment. I hope I was able to help you out.

It all depends on price, budget, desired use etc. Once you elaborate a bit more on this it will help. Maybe you could post prices of some of the tablets mentioned in the thread already?

I've currently got a Nexus 7 (2013) and a HP Omni 10 - I use them both for different things (i chose both of these for the price i got them for vs comparable equipment, more than choosing what i would have based on a level playing field)

===

I think the 8.4 inch Galaxy Tab Pro is a great "in the middle" tablet (especially for the price it can be had around here). The iPad Air is a great bit of kit also (but also carries a price premium)

It depends

We are looking at -Purpose (Wifi / Cellular), -Pricing, -Durability, -Better Battery Performance, OS & Lastly but not the least is Size.

Of a Tablet

Apple will be the best choice if you ask me, then you scale down to whether a bigger size or not (then iPad & iPad Mini comes in)?

I will choose the iPad Mini over the iPad because if its portability.

Android Tablet

Remember the Nexus 7 doesn't support Cellular (Wifi Only) which I dont recommend to anyone.

Frankly speaking, Android doesn't look nice on a Tablet (Maybe earlier versions will do).

OS & Apps

Both tablets doesn't support Whatsapp as you've already mentioned, (but there are ways to make it work). Whatsapp on the iPad Mini looks nicer & better (because of it screen size).

All things been equal I will recommend the iPad Mini with 64GB Celluar+Wifi
