The development team at Guerrilla Games working on Killzone: Shadow Fall is eager to put to bed all controversies about the resolution and the frame rate of their recently launched shooter but some fans might still remain confused even after reading the comprehensive explanation.

Poria Torkan, a producer on the title, states in an official blog post that both single player and multiplayer modes for the shooter run at 1080p.

He then adds, “In Multiplayer mode, however, we use a technique called ‘temporal reprojection’, which combines pixels and motion vectors from multiple lower-resolution frames to reconstruct a full 1080p image. If native means that every part of the pipeline is 1080p then this technique is not native.”

The developer acknowledges that his team has failed to communicate accurately on the resolution issue and says that it will be clearer in the future to make sure no confusion appears.

He adds, “Temporal reprojection is a technique that tracks the position of pixels over time and predicts where they will be in future. These ‘history pixels’ are combined with freshly rendered pixels to form a higher-resolution new frame. This is what Killzone: Shadow Fall uses in multiplayer.”

More detail on the technique is offered in the official blog.

Guerrilla Games admits that sometimes the prediction of the temporal reprojection can fail and generate blurry images or thin vertical lines.

At the same time the use of the technique means that Killzone: Shadow Fall benefits form reduced lag controller and increased responsiveness, which is very important for any multiplayer experience, especially if it wants to create a competitive space for its fans.

More details will be offered in a Game Developers Conference lecture on the issue that Guerrilla Games will hold on March 14.

Recently the developer and publisher Sony announced that the PlayStation 4 shooter is set to get access to a new expansion, called The Insurgent, in April.

It is designed to add a new class, which can use its Hack and Steal powers to turn the tide on the battlefield despite the fact that it only starts with a pistol, because it can turn turrets against those who placed them and can obtain weapons from downed enemies.

The Insurgent will also deliver more maps to play on, new weapons and abilities that can be used by the classes that are part of the original Killzone: Shadow Fall release.

The game has generated more than 2 million sales since it was delivered alongside the PlayStation 4.
