The incident took place in a private university in Uttar Pradesh

A group of Kashmiri students in India is facing charges of sedition for apparently cheering the country's arch rival Pakistan in a cricket match.

The students of a university in Uttar Pradesh state were suspended at the weekend after the Asia Cup match in which Pakistan defeated India.

A sedition charge carries a three-year prison term in India.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said the charge against the students was "unacceptably harsh".

"I believe what the students did was wrong and misguided but they certainly didn't deserve to have charges of sedition slapped against them," Mr Abdullah tweeted.

He said the punishment would "ruin their [students'] futures and will further alienate them".

Mr Abdullah said he would talk to the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh and "intervene on behalf of these misguided students".

The incident happened at the Swami Vivekanand Subharti University in Meerut city on Sunday where a group of students allegedly "celebrated Pakistan's win", leading to arguments with other college mates, reports say.

The university administration then ordered an inquiry and decided to suspend the students as a "precautionary measure".

Some of the Kashmiri students denied any wrongdoing in their statements to the media.

Cricket matches between India and Pakistan are tense, dramatic affairs and are passionately followed in both countries.

Claimed by both countries in its entirety, Kashmir has been a flashpoint for more than 60 years.

The South Asian rivals have also fought two wars and a limited conflict.

 was wrong but misguided :wtf: . Maybe Abdulah(chief minister of kashmir) does not know the meaning of anti-national behaviour/activity.

I find this idiotic. Suspend them, slap them a little, question their morality and nationality a little, but I don't see a need for sedition charges.

What's a big deal for cheering for opposite country's team, lot of people here in certain parts of Mumbai do. Infact, they celebrate and light firecrackers when the opposite team wins, put sedition charges against this population first. But no, this population is a votebank for many parties, so no one does anything here.

I'm not favoring these students, infact, there should be a strict punishment for them. They should also be asked about why they are wasting the country's university's seats if they care about the neighbour country so much, leave the country and study there then. However, charging someone for cheering for other team is a bit overboard. The university should handle this instead.

it is a game people why even go to the extent of seeing the need to kick them out of their school for cheering for the wrong team,,,rather ridiculous...at worse...question their school, spirit ...but sedition and to then to say they have no right to be living in your country...really??? it is actually very scary that just cheering for the wrong team their very lives could be in danger???
