Reefa
On the list of games we never thought we'd see, there are a few bullet points that make our eyes glisten a little bit: Any kind of modern remake of TIE Fighter, a sequel to Planescape: Torment, and anything that even remotely resembles the amazing gameplay that was The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past for the good ol' Super Nintendo. We're still holding out for the first two, but we definitely had a bit of a dropped-jaw moment when word came across our desks that someone had remade The Legend of Zelda — the classic 1986 iteration, we should note — as a first-person… shooter? Sword-stabber? Shield-holder? We're not quite sure what to call it, but it's a first-person adventure for sure. And even better, said developer — Ubiquitron — has made it such that this first-person reworking can be played using the much-anticipated Oculus Rift virtual reality headset. Yes, you will now be able to transform into a walking, stabbing, potion-buying Link from the comfort of your desk."The gameplay and artwork are virtually identical to the original NES classic, however in this version you see the world through Link's eyes, in all of it's virtual 3D 8-bit glory. Explore the world, find weapons, kill enemies, collect items, discover secrets, buy upgrades, delve into dungeons, defeat bosses, restore the Triforce, and rescue Princess Zelda from the evil Ganon," reads the description of "ZeldaVR Beta."You read that right — that's the word "beta" in the title of the game right now. Currently, only the game's overworld and first dungeon are available for the stomping. We wager it's likely more interesting to watch as a YouTube demo than an actual playthrough unless you happen to have an early version of said Oculus Rift. The developers anticipate that they'll be able to release the game in about a month or so as a completely free download from virtualreality.io. What we're curious to know is just how long said game might stay up. While the game will be launching for free, which does give it a little bit of protection in the "they're not making any money with it" sense, it remains to be seen just what kind of a stance Nintendo might take, if any, given that ZeldaVR is pretty blatantly copying the sprites, gameplay, and trademarks of the Zelda creator. If you still want a little first-person Zelda action but don't have a virtual reality headset on standby, you can always check out Zelda II FPS: A 2010 first-person homage to The Legend of Zelda that you can play directly in your Web browser.
