Windows 8 doing badly against Windows 7

First year sales not up to much

Microsoft Windows 8 has racked up more than 200 million license sales since its launch 15 months ago, which is about 40 million behind the first year sales of Windows 7. A Microsoft spokesperson announced the sales figures at a Goldman Sachs technology conference and it is the first official sales figures that Redmond has admitted.

To be fair, it might not be just that Windows 8 is being touted as Microsofts latest Vista, there has been a steady two-year decline in personal computer sales. Windows 8 was designed as a flexible new system that would work equally well on desktops PCs and touchscreen tablets, but it ended up alienating many traditional users.

More worryingly for Microsoft, the number of people actually using Windows 8 is persistently low. While many businesses technically have purchased Windows 8 licenses, few have installed it. According to tech statistics firm NetMarketShare, only about 11 percent of PC users worldwide are using Windows 8 or 8.1. Meanwhile, 48 percent are sticking with Windows 7 and 29 percent are still running Windows XP, which is more than a decade old.

Windows 7 is Microsoft's most successful operating system to date, selling more than 450 million licenses. It is probably telling that we have been early adopters of every version of Windows and have not even looked Windows 8.

So humble I mean, windows 7 has had his time.
Of course in the age of windows 7, it was the best. Of course!
But I respect the statistics, although, no way still using windows 7 as my actual O.S. No way!
Continue using the old one is rejecting the new.
Windows 8.1 is the current and the future, as is in applications, as features and the news.

I am curious as to how many Win 8x users install a "Start Menu" add-on, such as Start8, Startisback, etc, which would effectively turn their computer into Win 7?

I think these users should be counted as users of Win 7 rather than Win 8x.

Ohh let's invent <METRO> shall we.. oh wait, we need a way to switch between apps, let's put a new bar on the side where we can see a list of them and move them around and close them. hmm we need somewhere to put the start button. how about another bar at the side? Hmmm we still need a close button. let's release update 1 and put a nice bar at the top with a close button. hmm we still need to minimize apps to run in the background.. let's add a minimize button to that bar.. hmm we need to resize apps now, maybe in update 2. hmm now we need to show apps on that bar we have there at the button...

wait one second, doesn't that bar have the active windows and the notification taskbar AND THE FREAKING STARTBUTTON RIGHT THERE ALL IN ONE?? DOESN'T THE DESKTOP WINDOWS CLOSE, MINIMIZE, MAXIMIZE AND RESIZE ACCORDING TO THE USER'S NEEDS??

YOU'RE TRYING TO REINVENT THE WHEEL YOU FUCKING RETARDS!! PEOPLE MUCH SMARTER THAN YOU HAVE THOUGHT ABOUT THIS PROBLEM ALREADY...

That's why they made the desktop and taskbar in the first place... it's called WINDOWS because apps needed windows to run in. At the advent of the OS, all apps ran fullscreen much like modern metro. Engineers at the time solved the problem of multitasking and put common locations on the start menu, with all the programs listed there.

WIN 7 was perfect.. that's why they went and screwed it up with WIN8.

difference_1.jpg

We didn't want back the start button alone... we wanted everything that the start button does. It's the trademark of WIN OS for a reason. Not an applauncher for AOL style nonsense.

I really like my Windows 8.1. I have it installed in several computers. In the first one, I was weak and installed ClassicShell. Then I got a touch screen laptop and I just got used to it.

Actually to me it's faster in ALL Windows version to press the Windows key and start typing the first letters of the program I want, than actually browsing the Start Menu, which I NEVER do. So in Windows 8.1 I just do the same: press my Windows key (or even better: Windows key + S), type the first three or four letter of the application, and press enter.

I don't even need a Start menu anymore, but sometimes I forget which applications I have.

I purchased a new PC for my son today and booted up the operating system on it, windows 8.1

I am impressed and my son is very happy, it's like his xbox.

So it's better by 99%.

I didnt like Windows 8 but 8.1 fixed alot of what I complained about. Feels like a lighter Windows 7 to me. Windows 7 is outstanding and for most of my personal work programs and gaming but Windows 8.1 is for on the go on a tablet and just messing around also as a native OS on my desktop. I use both Windows 7 and 8.1 respectfully.

I resisted until I saw Battlefield 4 running on Windows 8.1. It was better. A lot better? No, but still better.

I upgraded because of this, but was afraid of not getting used to it. Well, now there's nothing in this world that would make me go back to Windows 7. Windows 8.1 is a lighter and better OS.

It's faster, takes more advantage of my hardware and I really don't miss the start button. As someone said earlier in this thread, tapping Windows key and typing the first letters of your app name is way faster than browsing the start menu.

If there's one thing that I miss, it's Aero Glass. It was really pleasant to look at.
