Reefa
The NFL's layers of security at Super Bowl XLVIII proved vulnerable to an expired festival pass and some social engineering. During MVP Malcolm Smith's postgame appearance, independent journalist and conspiracy theorist Matthew Mills rushed the stage and grabbed the microphone, exhorting viewers to investigate the truth about 9/11. Mills wasn't just hijacking a press conference, though: he had infiltrated a stadium that law enforcement hoped would be all but impenetrable. Before the event, police and the FBI had set up multiple layers of security in an attempt to identify potential terrorists, mixing plainclothes agents into the crowd and setting up hundreds of temporary security cameras in Midtown Manhattan to catch suspicious activity at Super Bowl events.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDXkyzxpkLo Mills tells NJ.com that he initially wasn't even looking to slip into into the stadium itself, just to get close enough to conduct fan interviews. Then, however, he saw a bus meant to ferry staff to the Super Bowl. He then apparently boarded the bus using an old badge from a festival, keeping security from looking too closely by telling them he was late and needed to get in quickly. Finally, he found himself at the media tent where Smith was being interviewed. "I just saw my opportunity to get my word out there and I took it," he says. His on-air message warned that 9/11 was "perpetrated by people within our own government." We Are Change, an independent media group whose issues include the supposed 9/11 cover-up, describes Mills as a former intern.NJ.com reports that Mills was arrested and charged with trespassing, but was released a couple of hours after crashing the stage. Mills, for his part, says he's "dumbfounded" by how far he got. But for all the Super Bowl's security, its sheer size makes it difficult to police effectively. Last year, two Savannah State University students taped themselves sneaking into the Super Bowl, attributing their success partly to the distraction of Beyonce's halftime performance.Source

calguyhunk
... police and the FBI had set up multiple layers of security in an attempt to identify potential terrorists ...As an aside, it's just sad that we have come to this day, where every public area has to be barricaded and every gathering policed not for drunk young idiots creating a nuisance, but for deeply motivated lunatics trying to mass-murder innocent people, including women and children. :(I still remember as a kid going to the local airport (NSB International @ Dum Dum, Kolkata) and standing on a terrace and seeing jumbo jets taking off from what seemed like hand shaking distance at the time. The sound was beyond deafening, but the excitement of seeing planes from up-close was truly something amazing! The passengers were passing right by us on their way to taking their respective flights. No security checks, no frisking, no cautious glances or questioning by anybody in uniform. The world was just such a trusting and beautiful place :thumbsup:Today, passing through the same airport requires diligent planning and arriving an hour and a half early for international flights (and roughly an hour for the domestic ones) because of all the checking and frisking that you have to undergo :o Loss of privacy, loss of trust and overall, a heart breaking loss of innocence. Sad, really, that kids these days won't even know those days :(Like my Mom reminisces about her childhood days when visiting heads-of-state and national leaders would move around in convertibles, including Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip from the UK, Eisenhower from the US, Japan's Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko and Khrushchev from the USSR among others. :yes:She, with her family and friends would line the streets to catch a glimpse of them and their cavalcade would move at a snail's pace as they would take turns to wave at people on both sides of the thoroughfare. Security? What security? In more recent times, I remember going with my Uncle to hear Mr. Nelson Mandela speak at the Eden Gardens in 1990 and although the security arrangement was solid, it wasn't half as bad and stifling as it is even for IPL games these days ;)All that changed with the assassination of JFK. :o Bulletproof vehicles became the norm and the innocence was lost for ever. And things have only gotten from bad to worse since then, and as of today, things don't seem to be moving in the right direction either. :nono: Edited February 4, 2014 by calguyhunk
