ibm650
Microsoft reanimates Windows XP's corpseFirm promises security updates until mid-2015 following user backlashBy Chris MerrimanThu Jan 16 2014, 12:19SOFTWARE CHURN OUTFIT Microsoft has withdrawn the "do not resusitate" order for Windows XP.Last week, Microsoft stuck another nail in the coffin of Windows XP, announcing plans to withdraw support for Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) in three months time. However, in a blog post published on Thursday, the Redmond company explained that although nothing has changed it will continue to provide security product updates for Windows XP through mid-2015.The firm said, "Microsoft has announced the Windows XP end of support date of April 8, 2014. After this date, Windows XP will no longer be a supported operating system."To help organizations complete their migrations, Microsoft will continue to provide updates to our antimalware signatures and engine for Windows XP users through July 14, 2015."What Microsoft actually said is that again it has completely underestimated the backlash from users, some of whom have been unwilling or unable to upgrade to more recent versions of Windows, and has decided to reinsert the withdrawn feeding tube.Although Microsoft said that it still would really rather that people stop using Windows XP and buy one of its new, shiny and expensive operating systems, now it won't allow gremlins into the works come 9 April. This will come as good news to many of our readers who have said that they still prefer Windows XP over its successors, and it will also be a relief to some blue chip businesses, particularly in the banking sector, that have not been able to upgrade their machines.Meanwhile, Windows XP continues to play out one of the longest and most convoluted death scenes since Jim Carrey's Oscar winning performance in The Mask. µ
