Oops ... Kentucky State Representative Leslie Combs, a Democrat, says she supports the right to bear arms - even after accidentally firing her semiautomatic handgun. Picture: Leslie Combs/Facebook Source: Supplied
A US DEMOCRAT accidentally fired her semiautomatic handgun in the state capital building.
Kentucky State Representative Leslie Combs was unloading the gun in her office in the Capitol Annex on Tuesday when it went off.
The bullet hit the floor and ricocheted toward a bookshelf, according to WHAS11.
"I thought it was totally clear," Combs said on Wednesday.
"I am a gun owner. It happens."
Fellow Democrat representative Jeff Greer was in the room at the time, but Combs said she was following safety procedure and that nobody was in harm's way.
"I was purposely disarming it to put it up because I didn't like it and I didn't want to use it any more," she said.
" ... I had had it in my purse I carry usually, and I thought I'm going to put that sucker away,'' she told USA Today.
Combs said she has a concealed carry permit, allowing her to carry the gun, which she said she often carries in her purse.
Kentucky State Police Sgt Jason Palmer, who heads the legislative security unit, said Combs accidentally fired the gun once about 2.30pm on Tuesday.
"No evidence of criminal acts were observed," he said, adding that most of the bullet fragments were recovered and there was no sign that any fragment travelled outside the room.
He said the incident was reported to the state police at 4.25pm.

Asked if the incident caused her to reconsider carrying a gun, Combs said, "I am a gun owner. I support the right to bear arms. As a female - particularly for protection rights - I feel the need to carry a firearm.
"I will be the first proponent for gun safety, at the same time I'm also a proponent in support of people to be able to carry weapons properly and with a concealed carry permit."

"I am a gun owner. It happens."

No, she's an irresponsible gun owner. No, it doesn't 'happen' if you practice firearm safety. I have never had one discharge while clearing the chamber and releasing the magazine.

I'm glad she's chosen to not use or own her handgun anymore because she obviously has no clue how to safely handle a firearm.

"I thought it was totally clear,"

you mean she unlaoded it, and pulled the trigger out of bordeom, or to show off?

guns don't just "go off"

Agreed, if you ignorantly mishandle automobiles, trains, planes, buses, cranes or hand or long arms, you don't need any of them

because you are NOT concerned of or interested in the notion of safety first

Just a note to the person that posted this article:

The title should be amended to read "Kentucky State Representative" rather than "U.S. Senator." There is a big, and relevant, difference between the two.

Thanks for the notice. However, Original title was quite long something "US Kentucky State Democrat Senator Leslie Comb fires gun; says I am a gun owner, it happens" I never change original title context, I made it short, that's it.

Currently title: (Democrat Leslie Combs accidentally fires gun; says 'it happens')
