Comatose Schumacher hit by lung infection: report

Published on Feb 12, 2014, 6:32 PM

Formula One legend Michael Schumacher, who is still lying in a coma in a French hospital, has contracted a lung infection, according to reports.

The effects on the fragile state of health of the 45-year-old were unknown, it said, the German newspaper Bild reported Wednesday.

Schumacher's spokeswoman, Sabine Kehm, told the newspaper: "We are not commenting on speculation."

Schumacher has been in a coma since his December 29 ski accident, when he badly injured his head, causing serious swelling of the brain.

The doctors treating him in the hospital in the French city of Grenoble two weeks ago said they were trying to coax him out of the coma by reducing his sedation.

PS. This is not good, please pray for his recovery !

I'm not trying to make fun or something like it, but how on earth did he injured so bad skiing?

It was likely a freak accident which unfortunately sometimes happen in the most unlikely circumstances.

Life is fragile, treasure it as much as you can.

Good news ! Thanks for all your prayers.

Schumacher has beaten lung infection: report

Formula One legend Michael Schumacher, lying in a coma in a French hospital since a December skiing accident, has overcome a lung infection, German daily Bild reported Friday.

The newspaper had reported two days earlier that Schumacher had contracted pneumonia last week, but it said Friday that the infection in fact had happened earlier and this week no longer spells an acute danger.

Therefore Schumi has already won the fight against pneumonia, said the top-selling daily, using the popular nickname for the 45-year-old German racing driver.

Schumacher has been in intensive care in Grenoble University Hospital since his December 29 accident in the Alpine resort of Meribel in which he hit his head against a rock in an impact strong enough to crack his helmet.

After surgery to reduce bleeding and bruising he was placed in a medically induced coma and his body temperature lowered to reduce the risk of further damage.

Schumachers spokesman said on January 30 that the drugs used to keep him in a coma were being reduced with a view to bringing him back to consciousness.

His family said Thursday he was still in a waking up process which could take a long time.

Schumacher out of coma, has left Grenoble hospital: Spokeswoman

LYON (AFP) - Formula One champion Michael Schumacher is out of a coma and has left the French hospital treating him since a devastating ski accident in December, his spokeswoman said Monday.
"Michael has left the CHU Grenoble (hospital) to continue his long phase of rehabilitation. He is not in a coma anymore," Sabine Kehm said in a statement.
"His family would like to explicitly thank all his treating doctors, nurses and therapists in Grenoble as well as the first aiders at the place of the accident, who did an excellent job in those first months.
"For the future we ask for understanding that his further rehabilitation will take place away from the public eye," she said, without giving further details about his condition or where the seven-time world champion was sent to.

Really good news. I had given up all hope reading all the glum predictions from medical professionals over the past few months. I hope that he does make a full recovery and even if he doesn't, hopefully he won't end up vegetative, paraplegic or with severe neurological complications, inhibiting normal functionality. Wouldn't it be great btw if he could just get back behind the wheels again as if nothing happened. One can always hope
