Spain approves new restrictive abortion law

Madrid: Spains conservative government on Friday approved tight restrictions on abortion, allowing the practice only in the case of rape or when there is a serious health risk tothe mother or fetus.

The previous government made abortion widely legal before the 14th week only three years ago. But the ruling Popular Party has long sided with the Roman Catholic Church on moral and social issues and made changing the law one of its main promises in the 2011 vote that brought it to power.

Justice minister Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon said the change was necessary to provide greater protection for both women and the unborn. What the government understands is that in the dramatic circumstances of an abortion the woman is not guilty. The woman is always the victim, he said.

The bill has been vigorously opposed by most opposition parties and womens groups, who see it as an attack on womens rights and a step backward compared to Spains neighbours in Europe. The legislation must still be approved by parliament, but the Popular Partys large majority means it is almost certain to pass.

Women seeking abortions will now need approval from two doctors who are not performing the procedure and doctors can decline to perform an abortion for reasons of conscience, Ruiz-Gallardon said.

I read this news before and did not post it thinking of might be offensive for some Spaniards. Now that it was posted: Firstly, the two given news links and photo are different than the current post. Secondly, I found "bitches" in OP's comment "Stupid bitches protest" insulting women, as this is not part of theoriginal news. I do not like any rule with close religious tight. Abortion is a human right in many ways and if there is a "High Court" in Spain, it will be struck down.

And finally, likewise, I hope radical religious corrupt government in Turkey would go away soon, too :)

I feel the greatest destroyer of peace today is 'Abortion', because it is a war against the child... A direct killing of the innocent child, 'Murder' by the mother herself... And if we can accept that a mother can kill even her own child, how can we tell other people not to kill one another ? How do we persuade a woman not to have an abortion? As always, we must persuade her with love... And we remind ourselves that love means to be willing to give until it hurts....

I think abortion should be done if it represents a risk, physical or psychologically, for a woman who has been raped, but I don't think the baby is guilty of what has happened.

Must say I find your attitude towards women disappointing and the words you've chosen to express your thoughts extremely objectionable. These "dirty activities" you so loudly condemn (which most guys given a chance would never say no to) require both sexes to participate (for procreation at least), but of course the man goes scot free with nothing to hide and it's the woman who (literally) carries the burden. And when women protest to demand control over their own bodies you dare call them "stupid bitches"? Sickening. At the 14 week stage the fetus is not even viable (not till the third trimester), so it's not "murder", no matter how much the religious hardliners try to sensationalize the issue. The previous law made late-term abortion illegal which was perfectly fine due to the risk to both maternal and foetal health and the considerably stronger opposition to termination of a viable fetus. On the other hand, a first trimester abortion is actually safer than childbirth itself, even in developed countries like America. There's also the very real fact that making abortion illegal results in increased illegal abortions and consequently female deaths.

BTW, according to the sites I checked it seems contraceptive and even emergency contraceptive i.e. morning-after pills (la pildora del dia despues) are used frequently in Spain and can be obtained over the counter at pharmacies, often even without the need for a doctor's prescription. Why is that? Both are "unnatural" too and interfere with conception. Do you think these should be outlawed too and women should have absolutely no say in whether intercourse should automatically lead to pregnancy or not?

By all means there should be safeguards in place to prevent abuse of legal abortion (early termination of pregnancy), but IMO it is far, far more preferable to abort an unviable up to 14 week old fetus rather than bring an an unwanted child into this world and abandon her/him to the State with the extremely high probability of having nothing to look forward to but a life of want, neglect and hardship.

Wow, really? Not actual wars or pogroms/genocides that kill millions daily or terrorist attacks or other such heinous activities, but abortion is the greatest destroyer of peace? Way to go sensationalizing the issue.
