geeteam
Samsung this evening announced it will launch the industry’s first 1-terabyte (1TB) mSATA SSD this month. That doubles the capacity (512GB) of some of the largest-capacity mSATA SSDs generally available today. As such, the 1TB 840 EVO mSATA SSD is poised to bring unprecedented large-capacity hard storage to some of the market’s thinnest portables. The 1TB mSATA SSD uses four flash memory packages, each with 16 layers of 128Gb chips. It’s just 3.85mm thick — about 60% thinner than an average hard disk drive — and weighs just 8.5 grams. That’s about 92% lighter than a typical HHD. It yields 98,000 random read and 90,000 random write IOPS, while pulling 540MB/s sequential read speeds and 520 MB/s sequential write speeds. The announcement of the ginormous-capacity storage device was part of the reveal for the company’s new lineup of 840 EVO mSATA SSDs, which come in 120GB, 250GB, 500GB and 1TB capacities. The whole line uses 128 Gb NAND flash memory, and they all use Samsung’s own controller with TurboWrite. No exact release date was mentioned — just that it will come out sometime in December. That may be pushing the holiday shopping season a bit late, but as a high-end storage device it’s less a gift item than an upgrade for computer users who like their storage huge, fast, and as physically compact as humanly possible. It will also likely cost a pretty penny. Keep an eye on SlashGear for news about the giant flash-based drive’s pricing against performance. Our SSD portal should serve you nicely.
