94% of Organizations Are Still Running Windows XP

A research conducted by VMware in October reveals that no less than 94 percent of the organizations on Windows XP are still running the aging platform, with only 34 percent of them actually planning to migrate.

At the same time, 36 percent of the IT managers admit that the transition to a newer operating system is not even close to being completed. Out of these, 79 percent are saying they are moving to Windows 7, while 35 percent have picked Windows 8.

The study, which was conducted by Vanson Bourne, but sponsored by VMware and Dell, also revealed that businesses have an average of 24 applications that are only compatible with Windows XP, which obviously makes the move to a newer platform a bit more difficult.

“The most notable thing about this research isn’t just how few companies have fully migrated from Windows XP to date, but how many business-critical applications there are still in operation that will only run on XP,” commented David Parry-Jones, regional director, UK and Ireland at VMware.

“These business-critical applications related to finance, sales or customer relationship management can affect the bottom line, potentially disrupt operations and damage the reputation of organisations.”

At this point, Windows XP is running on more than 30 percent of desktop computers worldwide, which makes the aging platform the second most popular OS in the world.

Microsoft continues its plans to move users from XP to a newer platform, reminding that no security patches and updates will be released as of April 8, 2014. At the same time, Microsoft might also stop delivering updates for Security Essentials on Windows XP.

China Calls for Microsoft to Extend Windows XP Support

China, for example, calls for Microsoft to extend support for Windows XP, saying that many government computers are still running this particular OS version.

What’s more, government officials are claiming that Microsoft exposes them to unnecessary risks, adding that Microsoft should at least keep Windows XP alive because they paid for a legitimate license instead of using pirate software.

Last but not least, Chinese officials are claiming that a potential transition to Windows 8 is too expensive, so the modern operating system currently has a 3 percent market share in the country.

Of course, Microsoft hasn’t yet released a statement on this, but given the fact that the company wants so much to get rid of Windows XP, do not expect a sudden change of heart.

The World Economic Crisis forbits IT expenditure...

Moreover, there are compatibility issues as old Apps are not compatible with the new versions of Windows.

Some possible reasons why:

1) They can't afford a corporate upgrade and piracy is NOT an option in business.

2) They may not trust newer OS systems or like how they function.

3) They are just plain ignorant to all of the issues of needing to update and upgrade.

Or all of the 3 at the same time...

I was so disappointed that my initial quick reading was incorrect and that  Jason Bourne  wasn't looking into the vast XP conspiracy. :P

...

The real reason is that there is no great incentive to "upgrade". Why waste money on something they don't need?

Hell, I'm still using XP too. I have it installed on SSD and it runs like a bat out of hell compared to newer Windows versions.

You do know that Windows XP does not support TRIM right?

only reason is #1...there is no need to replace all your computers and find compatible software every 18 months especially on the scale that large corporations would need ned to do...example world wide my company would need to buy new OS and software and computers to replace literally thousands and thousands of computers..nobody has that kind of money to burn nor do they have a need to do so as often an the home user feels they need to do so

China is developing its own version of Linux. Why they worry about it? :wtf:

Have nothing against extension of support for xp, but why china is worried in this case?

Maybe their supercomputer still runs on xp?

The simple business solution: Don't want to dish out millions of dollars in upgrading your rigs? Use Linux. The installers are easy to use, the system itself is easy to use, the networking setup shouldn't be a big hassle, it can do all the same stuff that XP can and ITS FREE.

Not unless they intend to modify their systems 360o then I see no reason why they shouldn't use Linux.

I don't know about corporate users, but I know that 7, 8, and 8.1 give me nothing I need or want that XP doesn't give me...and the newer OSs use a lot more meory and are slower. Furthermore, I just don't like the newer OSs. So why should I change?

The "security" scare stories are just that...scare stories. I've not installed one update since SP3, and I've had no malware problems at all.

XP is OVER 12 YEARS old, mainstream support ended 4 YEARS ago and there has been ALMOST 6 YEARS time to plan an upgrade, FFS.

Hell, where I work - we're still using MS-DOS 6.2 on some computers. I see win 95, 98, NT, 2000, XP and just a few Win 7 computers there. The older ones are controlling machinery or using proprietary (expensive) software. Upgrading at this point is not an optiion in the real world of a small business. Of course internet access should be blocked on the older systems.

Not only is this a funny idea, but eww. If you're an open-source person then spend your precious time and effort using, contributing to and improving Linux. Don't expect to get free handouts (that too of an entire OS with proprietary and patented technology still very much in use in newer releases) from any company, be it Microsoft, Apple or whatever.

No offense meant, but I'll rather help develop Linux which is so much better now. ;)
