Matsuda
One of the promises that Microsoft made when it launched Windows 8 (and confirmed once again with the launch of Windows 8.1) was that its modern operating system has what it takes to lend a hand to the declining PC market and boost new computer sales. To do that, Microsoft put the emphasis on touch capabilities, saying that all vendors that embrace such technology have a great opportunity to boost sales. That didn’t happen until now and, as far as NPD Group’s DisplaySearch is concerned, it is not going to happen in the near future either. In the first half of 2013, DisplaySearch says, shipments of notebooks equipped with touch screens reached 6.2 million units, accounting for only 7 percent of all notebook sales. And unfortunately for Microsoft and other companies that are now betting big on touch screens, that’s not going to happen anytime soon. This year, shipments of such devices are expected to reach 19.8 million units, which represent an 11 percent share of the notebook market. Things will slightly improve by 2017, when touch penetration in the notebook industry is expected to reach 40 percent.“Touch penetration in notebooks was modest in the first half of the year, and we expect a slight increase to 10% in the second half. Premium pricing and a lack of compelling uses for touch screens on notebooks continue to hinder adoption,” said Richard Shim, senior analyst at NPD DisplaySearch. “As touch interfaces become increasingly common across all mobile devices, however, it is just a matter of time before the technology also becomes more prevalent in notebooks.”Microsoft focus on touch capabilities has been one of the main reasons why Windows 8 has failed to impress, with experts and analysts across the world explaining that all these features do not make much sense on desktop computers. On the other hand, Redmond continues investments in touch-capable devices and technologies and says that eventually, everybody will discover the benefit of such an operating system.Source

insanedown58
They should settle a deal with the creators of Leap Motion and pack Leap Motions with different Windows 8.1 desktops.
ShEsHy
“Touch penetration" sounds dirty.Anyways, MS can fuck off with its Windows Phone 8 UI port. I plan to stay with 7 for the foreseeable future, as do all of the people I fix computers for (with the exception of my brother's girlfriend who is stuck on Win8 because there aren't any Win7 drivers for her laptop's BlueTooth). MidnightDistortions
Most people imo prefer to get a tablet/iPad or a touch phone. I don't think they really want to upgrade that trusty laptop or need to replace their monitor all for the sake of getting touch. That and you basically have to pry W7 from me. janedoe
I am a mouse-man, dont touch !!Even mice are becoming touch-capable these days! They should settle a deal with the creators of Leap Motion and pack Leap Motions with different Windows 8.1 desktops. This just made me sad, because I wasted good money on one and it was such a disappointment that I tossed it into a drawer where it's been lying since gathering dust. Not to mention the shipping delays. I had such high hopes for it. :( Anyway, why would Microsoft bother paying for badly reviewed third-party tech when they have their own alternative? Kinect 2 will be coming for Windows soon (developer previews already sent out). In any case I don't see air gestures or voice commands competing with actual physical mouse or touch interaction anytime soon. Way too inaccurate for getting any useful work done. For now these are still more of a novelty with a lot more refinement required.Touch actually does make sense on mobile devices, and Windows 8, whatever its faults, has a good touch UI IMO (could be better of course, but of the current crop of OSes is the best). For desktop usage, it makes no sense. I got tired of using my Arc Touch mouse with my desktop, and unless one is crazy reaching out to poke at a touch-screen desktop monitor is idiotic. Microsoft clearly is betting big on touch-enabled devices exploding in popularity, but only time will tell how prudent their strategy was.
calguyhunk
Tried win 8.1 yesterday for first time and already planning on formatting that disk and load win 7 back on it, eight just sucks.Don't do that. Use this program called Start Is Back and what you'll get is a super fast Windows 7. You wouldn't be able to tell the difference if you didn't know any better. Remember, SiB for W8 and SiB+ for W8.1. :)The only thing you don't get for now is a stable Aero Transparency implementation. There's a program called Glass8, but it's still doesn't work exactly as advertized. On the plus side, you get faster search, faster boot, faster program launches and supposedly, better security. It really is Win7 on steroids :tehe: Edited December 2, 2013 by calguyhunk

ishmoo21
I've messed around with 8/8.1 for a few hours and was part of the beta program but I would not pay money to upgrade to it. I actually have a few key codes I doubt I will ever use unless I am building a new computer. Win 7 is just easier for me to use.
