Windows-XP-Losing-More-Users-on-a-Daily-

Windows XP remains an incredibly popular operating system less than six months before its retirement date and despite all warnings issued by the Redmond-based tech giant Microsoft. And still, some recent statistics provided by market researcher StatCounter for the first 25 days of November 2013 indicate that Windows XP users are finally jumping ship and embracing another platform.

At this point, Windows XP is installed on 19.31 percent of computers worldwide, according to StatCounter data, down from 19.44 percent last week. While the drop isn’t anything major, it’s still a sign that Windows XP users have started the transition to another operating system.

The question is what’s their next destination? Windows 8 has also lost users in the last 7 days (down from 7.54 percent to 7.51 percent), while Windows 7 maintained its market share to 51.8 percent.

The first thing that comes in mind is that some Windows XP users are switching to some non-Windows platforms, such as Mac OS X or Linux. And truth is, lots of our readers have confirmed that they won’t stay on Windows after XP reached end-of-support, so such a scenario is very likely.

What does Microsoft have to say about it? Not much, but Redmond has already explained that it’s essential for XP users to switch to a newer OS version, mostly because it could provide better security.

Of course, the company hopes that most users would pick Windows 8.1, but until now, the majority of those who actually decided to migrate have picked Windows 7 thanks to its familiar design.

At the same time, switching to Windows 8.1 also requires hardware upgrades, which for some companies could prove to be a rather expensive process that wouldn’t make much sense for a reduced workforce with less than 50 employees.

Good News . Please Die Windows Xp

Don't be like that. :P

I have the utmost respect for that OS. It has served half the globe faithfully for over a decade! Sure, it's old, but so is my grandpa. There's something cute about it when you look at the blue task-bar, the old windows... it will become a legend. I believe kids will be learning about it in schools when we are old as hell - and those same kids will find it funny and quaint that we've actually used it. The generation gap is slowly arriving on the Internet! xD

Do not disrespect XP :spank:

It was the OS for every person in this world. Almost a decade in every computer at home or work. Now it's time to move to Win7 (no Win8 :shit: )

With all the dirty tricks Microsoft is pulling, it's no surprise more people are moving away from XP. In all fairness, it's not that advisable to remain on an OS that ceases support soon, unless you know how to protect yourself, I would still think several businesses and even government corporations around the world that are still stuck on XP and have either no money or interest to move up to Windows 7. No one likes Vista and Windows 8 is still very misunderstood. However if what Microsoft so fervently claims is true, there might be hackers waiting to pounce on these XP systems and cause damage to users. I suppose we'll find out next year!

Everything must have an end. Even great things. While XP was a great OS, it's imperative that users move to a more secure one as their regular OS. Esp with MS dropping support.

I'm not going to get into the whole "is it time to dump XP or not" debate, because it's been done to death and frankly is becoming irritating. Are these tech journalists so jobless that they are going to have a weekly countdown till April 8, 2014? Instead I want to question the very basis for such reports. IMO a web traffic analytics company such as StatCounter can't provide such weekly stats accurate to the second decimal ("Windows 8 lost 0.03% of users in one week"). All it implies is that users of OS A or B encountered more or less StatCounter scripts during that time period, not necessarily that the user base increased or decreased that much. A week is too short a period to precisely measure OS usage stats (not to mention the stats are anyway very rough estimates at best), so it's ridiculous how these so-called journalists are relying on them and making grand proclamations about the demise or rise of different Windows versions. What a joke.

Have used it for a dozen years without a hitch.

Now I will have to upgrade to Windows 8 which looks like a stupid Apple OS with it's fancy tiles and no start menu.

All that is needed was kernel updates to make it more virus proof, instead we have new version(s) because they need to make more money.

based on what? ONLINE USAGE? FAIL. :wtf:

The gazillion XP boxes are still out there- they still exist- they STILL RUN...still playing games and doing more stuff OFF-LINE because of all the scare.

the results of this are skewed and false.

I have a PC i built in 2005 still running XP....

and my laptop has 2 different hard drives i can swap out- one with XP and one with Win 7

XP is NOT dead. Its just OFF THE RADAR...XP is strong. Its like saying Linux is dead. its false data

Actually, the real death occurs in May.

How come?

The last updates are in April, so theoretically, XP is safe that month. May will be the first month without updates. Knowing Microsoft, they will release a major update in May that will badly expose XP.

I've been using XP since it was released, and I'll continue to use it until Microsoft releases an OS I like better...and there's no prospect of that. (I'd switch to Linux, but certain software that I pretty well have to use is Windows-only.) For subjective reasons, I don't like 7. For good and sufficient reasons, I don't like 8. (We won't mention Vista.) I neither need nor want "support" from Microsoft. I haven't installed an update since SP3, and I've had no malware problems at all, nor do I expect any .I have a lot more confidence in Avast! than in Microsoft.

April 8 is Patch Tuesday, which still leaves the rest of the month. So I don't see how even theoretically XP is safe for the entire month of April.

As for your last sentence, I couldn't make heads nor trails of it. You mean to say Microsoft will surreptitiously release one final update in May that somehow no-one will come to know about and which will make XP completely vulnerable, thus forcing people to upgrade? If so then without doubt that has to be one of the biggest loads of conspiracy theory nonsense I have ever heard.
