Google Asks Users to Disable Ad Blocking for Its Sites

It looks like Google started to show warnings if you use AdBlock or AdBlock Plus, the most popular ad blockers (they have more than 50 million users). A reader from Brazil noticed this message: "Oh no, it seems like you are blocking Google's ads. These ads pay for Google products that people use every day. It's easy to deactivate ad blocking just for Google. And it won't change your ad blocking settings or other settings".

The message links to a filter that includes a long list of exceptions like "@@||www.google.com^$document" and "@@||maps.google.com^$document".

Here's a screenshot of the Google whitelist filter (it actually includes more domains):

This is pretty weird, considering that the ads were not blocked, as you can see in the screenshot. Google ads are not blocked by default in AdBlock Plus, since they're considered "acceptable ads". Some sites have speculated that Google paid AdBlock Plus to whitelist its ads, but that's not very clear.

Google Discovery also reported about this back in May, so it looks like the experiment is limited to Google Brazil, at least for now.

We have ad-blockers but it seems we are gonna need an ad-blocker warning message blocker.....and then after that an ad-blocker warning message blocker blocker .....and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and onand on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on :w00t: :w00t: :w00t: eatgun.gif?t=1323586720

What the ginormous major league F****!!! My ad blockers are turned off for nsane, Ars, etc. Small websites that do not blind you with annoying flash and banner ads etc. and that genuinely need our clicks once in a while. But "helping" a humongous for-profit (and increasingly douchy) corporate is completely out of question. Granted that they haven't quite topped Apple or Chevron as yet on the douchyness index, but they're getting there fast!

In any case, they're doing plenty well as it is without our help! Why would I help Schmidt, Page, Brin and their cronies make even more money off of us than they're doing already? :dunno:

Of course, on second thoughts, I promise I'll turn off all my ad blockers on Google domains if Schmidt/Page/Brin gives me a Nexus 5 for free LOL! :tehe:

We have ad-blockers but it seems we are gonna need an ad-blocker warning message blocker..... :w00t: :w00t: :w00t: eatgun.gif?t=1323586720

Can I request Google to stop tracking me then ?

Can I request Google to stop tracking me then ? Do not be so naive. Even when you're dead, Google will continue tracking and sending ads to You.

Their first step of course was to chuck out ad blockers such as ABP from the Play Store without any explanation. I fully expect their next step to be to detect ad blockers and completely deny use of their sites or ensure a degraded experience till these are disabled. I am actually hoping for them to do this. The mass exodus of users and inevitable backtracking from Google will really be a sight to behold!

What's with the Google hating? So they (kindly) asks us not block ads on their sites and we (kindly) ignore them. It's not like they're blocking access to their services until we disable adblocker. In the screenshot in the first post, there's a big cross on the top corner which we can press to close the notice.

Well nsanedown asks the same, so nsanedown is evil too?

Nsane is not a multi gazillion dollar enterprise. They need a few clicks from their users once in a while to make a few bucks. Most of us won't grudge them that. ;)

That's a gross oversimplification that attempts to compare a world-renown search engine that doubles as a multi-billion dollar enterprise with what is, essentially, a warez site. You cannot possibly be this obtuse.

You see Google as a big multinational corporation but you fail to see that bug corporation is made up by people that need to pay rent and feed their families too. So no it's not really that different other than the personal impact on many people would be much larger if Google couldn't make money.

You can try and defend Google all you want, but is nsanedown tracking people like Google is?

It's your own choice to be tracked by Google, if you don't want to be tracked by Google, stop using its services.

For me their services add value to my life and I believe that Google as a big company dependent on this trust its users put in it, will be careful with my data because if they loose our trust they'll ho bankrupt.

I am actually happy to reduce my dependence on them given all they stand for. Bing/DuckDuckGo are my search engines of choice now, with Google only a fallback option. The transition wasn't without hiccups but surprisingly was far less painless than I expected. YouTube I had dumped anyway since they switched over to G+ comments out of sheer desperation to prop up their failure of a social network. I visit it but rarely now when Hulu, Vimeo, DailyMotion, MetaCafe etc. offer no alternate. As for choice, while we don't have control over sites using Google's ad and analytics framework, I use all the plugins at my disposal to thwart their tracking scripts. (To my delight some of the sites I frequent moved away from Google integration voluntarily after the disastrous Panda update.) Finally, I own a single Android device that I hope to install a less Google-dependent Android mod on as soon as the warranty expires.

I can list lots of instances of Google violating the trust of its users and being fined for the same, but won't bother. It's your choice as you said, but I have found that they aren't as indispensable as they'd have you believe. I can do without their services just fine and the world hasn't come crashing down yet.

  • 2 weeks later...

Google can bugger off.

So if I want to use an advert blocker then I shall.

Does anyone know anything about this matter - is there some treatments, that already exist?
Google has already become quite unbearable. Some of the websites, which contains Google advertisement, can't longer even opened when use such explorer, which have no ads blocker added.
