Matsuda
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, unlike Mark Zuckerberg, does not place too much importance on ensuring that the entire planet has access to the internet. "As a priority? It’s a joke" he says in an interview with UK newspaper the Financial Times. The billionaire reveals that he would rather invest time and money in fighting disease around the world. In many ways this should come as little surprise; Gates is well known for his philanthropic work. But these days he seems keener than ever to move away from the technology that made him the man he is today, and focus instead on doing things that make a real difference."Technology’s amazing, it doesn’t get down to the people most in need in anything near the timeframe we should want it to."He recognizes the uneven distribution of wealth that exists around the globe: "Go to the Bangalore Infosys centers, but just for the hell of it go three miles aside and go look at the guy living with no toilet, no running water. The world is not flat and PCS are not, in the hierarchy of human needs, on the first five rungs."Gates is leading the way in showing just what a successful businessman can do for others. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation generates billions of dollars a year for worthy causes. He has helped to wipe out polio in India, and the fight continues in countries such as Nigeria and Afghanistan. There's still a long way to go, but it's interesting to think that the man who brought Windows to millions of computers is now actively involved in saving lives.View: Original Article

Bizarre™
How can we eradicate diseases without technology? It may have been possible in the past, but with diseases becoming complex every moment, I doubt anyone can create a cure without technology. Judging from your statements, I can see that you are against technology. Are you saying it is fine for technology to stop improving? to stop producing medicines for complex diseases? Are you saying people all over the world who has complex diseases can go die so that people in third world countries can have their drinking water? People may have survived in the past with limited technology, but I wonder how many people died before they found the cure to each disease. dMog
in no way am i against technology... i do not know how you get that from what i wrote..all i said that by providing the basis for clean drinking water a very large amount of disease in the third world will be remedied over night..and yes technology has to be used for that.... but in some cases there are no basic electricity to or moneys that come into to play to fix disease and even basic rudimentary access to clean drinking water so the technology in play has to be used to find a very simple and extremely inexpensive way to provide a sustainable source ...yes it is also good that technology will be used to cure things like cancer and other things but that is something totally different form what i was talking about and in no way was i saying or implying it was wrong
Bizarre™
I guess we both misinterpreted each other. Putting that aside, I disagree with Bill's philosophy about eradicating disease being more important than technology. I believe that eradicating disease goes hand in hand with technology. Unless of course Bill has thought of a better alternative. If he has, then good. In fact, I'll welcome it with open hands.
tezza
Bill Gates said fighting disease is more important than an internet connection, not technology.http://www.ft.com/cms/s/2/dacd1f84-41bf-11e3-b064-00144feabdc0.html

Arachnoid
The problem as I see it is that we have great problems eradicating viruses from a much simpler electronic networked system yet expect to resolve the one great goal of removing it from the human genome. LeetPirate
The headline misled you guys into a fruitless discussion, lol. In the correct context, Gates is saying that in the hierarchy of needs, a computer and the internet is much less important than basic health and hygiene. So what he says makes perfect sense: who the fuck cares if kids in Africa get free iPads when they are in greater need of health care and personal hygienic facilities. That's what Bill said and that's what he means.
