VLC-for-Windows-8-1-Is-a-Fake-App-396557

VideoLAN is getting ready to launch the final version of their Windows 8 port of VLC, so developers around the world looking to earn some easy money have only a few days left to do it.

A new app called VLC for Windows 8.1 has landed in the store this morning, trying to trick people into believing that this is the official VLC app.

The only problem is that VideoLAN will offer their original app for free, while this one costs $9.99 (€7.5) and doesn’t seem to be providing too many features on Windows 8 and RT.

There’s only one screenshot published in the Windows Store and showing the way the app is supposed to play movies, but no other features are presented. Of course, there’s no trial version available, so the only way to use VLC for Windows 8.1 is to buy it.

Wow, that's really sneaky! I don't know much about law, so not sure if without an official VLC app in the store or without VideoLAN complaining whether Microsoft can unilaterally and legally take a decision to ban such apps.

I wonder if VideoLAN which is the owner of the VLC trademark is doing its bit to stay on top of all these fakes/clones and reporting them to Microsoft for removal? I know that in many jurisdictions if a company doesn't aggressively protect its trademarks/IP then it can lose them. It would be nice if VideoLAN can provide details of any complaints made and what the response was from Microsoft.

P.S. About time the official app launched! I was hoping my KS contribution wouldn't go waste.

MS won't do $hit! They already have a shortage of apps on their Store, so they are on an approval spree. You can basically send anything - spam, malware - and they'll continue to approve them

Not that I care. Never used the Windows Store in my life for anything apart from the Win 8.1 download earlier today :)

People use the app store? :P

I've used App Store to download some newspaper apps, these are much better than the regular browser based newspaper websites..

:showoff: :showoff: :showoff:

:) All exaggeration aside I'm sure they'll try to be vigilant against spam and malware in the store to avoid infecting thousands and inviting even more criticism. As for being on an approval spree you're right, they are absolutely desperate to claim that their store has so many thousands of apps to obviously compete against Apple and Google, which is why at this point they're not concerned about app quality. I'm not too bothered about the store either, except of course on my Surface RT I don't really have a choice (which reminds me BTW, have to check if someone's managed to jailbreak RT 8.1 reliably yet).
