212eta
Microsoft has launched the Windows 8.1 exclusively via the store, with several company officials explaining that no stand-alone ISOs would be released. Now it turns out that someone in Redmond had a change of heart, as Microsoft might actually launch Windows 8.1 ISOs later this month. One of our readers told us that Microsoft’s support staff confirmed such plans, which would basically provide users with a second option for updating, but also with an easier way to perform a clean install. At this point, Windows 8.1 ISOs are already available for download for MSDN and TechNet subscribers, while end users can get it via a simple trick, but beginners might still have a hard time trying to get their hands on the files. We’re still waiting for an official statement from Redmond, so we’ve reached out to Microsoft for a word on this.Original Article Edited November 2, 2013 by 212eta
janedoe
People have been advocating this for ages and it makes perfect sense. Microsoft made a mistake in not making Windows 8 ISOs freely available to everyone like they did with Windows 7 via DigitalRiver. It is the key which matters after all, not the ISO itself. People who like to reinstall a clean copy of Windows to get rid of all the preinstalled crapware, or those who have messed up so badly that even the Reset feature doesn't work, all need ISOs. Also those who have multiple PCs that need to be upgraded to Windows 8.1 need ISOs too, because making them download the 3+ GB update repeatedly is just stupid. Making the ISOs available only to MSDN or TechNet subscribers or those who bought the OS digitally doesn't make sense, since it only serves to drive people in need to risky pirated downloads (not everyone knows how to use hashes to confirm that ISOs are untouched). BTW, I hope while they're at it they release Windows RT 8.1 ISOs too. Edited November 2, 2013 by janedoe

shorty6100
Well duh! They only did this "change of heart" because of all the problems people have updating through the store. Anytime a new OS comes out, I ALWAYS clean install.
