Comedian’s satirical number mocking the rule is a surprise internet favourite

http://vimeo.com/77904592

A song satirising Saudi Arabia’s driving ban for women has become a surprise internet favourite, getting close to seven million hits on YouTube since being launched on Saturday to coincide with a protest against the rule.

“It has exceeded all our expectations”, Hisham Fageeh, the 26-year-old comedian behind the hit, said.

“Say I remember when you used to sit, in the family car, but backseat,” the song begins after Mr Fageeh, dressed in a white thawb cloak and traditional red-chequered scarf, introduces himself as a singer and social activist.

Mr Fageeh will be aware of the fine line he is walking with his satire. Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam, is an absolute monarchy that forbids political protests. As a result, protests are rare in Saudi Arabia. Protest songs are even rarer.

The idea for “No Woman, No Drive” – an adaptation of Bob Marley’s famous reggae hit, “No Woman, No Cry” – came to the young Saudi comedian in the shower. “Like all good ideas”, he said.

Yet the actual writing and production only happened months later when he was shooting a segment in London, with his friends Fahad Albutairi and Alaa Wardi. They realized Twitter was lighting up with messages about the 26 October campaign to defy the no-driving ban in Saudi Arabia. It also happened to be Mr Fageeh’s 26th birthday.

“So we thought, let’s do the video. We made the whole thing in four to five days,” he said.

The lyrics include lines such as “ovaries all safe and well, so you can make lots and lots of babies”, in reference to a Saudi clerk who claimed driving would hurt women’s reproductive capacity. They also mock the social structure in Saudi Arabia where women need a male guardian’s permission to leave the house, marry, work, open a bank account or travel.

On Saturday, 16 women were stopped and fined for driving. They and their male guardians had to pledge to abide by the rule – which isn’t actually a law – in the future.

Yet Mr Fageeh has encountered no trouble and said the response has been quite the opposite.

“We’ve had nothing but positive feedback,” he said.

“We’ve had a lot of support and love from a lot of different people across the spectrum.”

It’s quite a surprise for the Saudi-American comedian, who completed high school in the US, starting just after 9/11. That period provided ample material for when he launched his comedy career in Washington and New York. But real success came in his native Saudi Arabia after he started a web series about a conservative, racist Saudi character that caught on. Now fame is overwhelming him. “I don’t know how to deal with it,” he said, joking that if it all goes awry he can make a living singing the song dressed as a clown at birthday parties.

SA is the most worst country around the world <_< ..It has no constitution , no woman rights ,no animal rights ,and even no human rights ! in addition everything there is imported (buildings,food,techs,weapons..) The funniest thing is that it claims liberty for other countries (like Syria , Algeria ,Pakistan ,..) :P

SA is doing many things wrong, but the immoral and utterly corrupted West has no right to teach and preach about morality and righteousness.

As long as they keep sending us oil, you don't have to worry about the US government bothering them or calling them out.

All they need to do is to start selling oil for any currency in the world, that will crush Petrodollar and with that American economy.

It's a double-edge sword and you never know which side is gonna cut you.

SA has helped Pakistan a lot with money and oil in the past, they gave us free oil for a long time and funded strategic assets, helped out in full fledge wars with the 2nd largest nation in the world (India), in turn we offer our gratitude and substantial defence capabilities.

Just to be clear.

1)Islam does not necessitate Monarchy, SA has got that wrong, the ruler is supposed to be selected by a MUJLIS e SHURA (Parliament), a single family ruling by force is not Islam.

2)SA constitution is the closest to SHARIA(but not SHARIA in full implementation), i am sorry if you feel they have no constitution.

3)In Islam when women travel, unless a emergency or a situation, they should take along a partner especially if they are travelling a distance (brother, son, father, husband and so on), there's nothing wrong with driving a car as well.

I can't deny that SA help a lot of countries especially Muslim countries like my country which is a very good point but you gotta feel that they do this only to countries obeying their political order (use money to influence in politics) and they need to do a lot in ameliorating human rights and constitution.., and for Pakistan-India conflicts I hope some day see them a united hand or state (Federalism is good solution) whatever religion you believe in and not being stupid to start wars over some areas because we are in a world where nations should be united to face the other big nations.. if not you will see yourself a sardine between sharks :p

I agree with you in a lot of aspects.. but I don't know what to say in the third, imagine your sister or mine studying at university, should I always go with her so she can study?!! ^^

I don't know who really did 9/11 acts... I have my doubts (Watched some documentaries about 9/11 conspiracy theories) which make a lot of people think that "certain elements in the U.S. government knew the attacks were coming but consciously let them proceed for various political, military and economic reasons" and if Bin Laden really did that it's 100% terrorism, even if America abused power on Muslim countries, Muslims don't have the right to kill innocent people just like what happened in Kenya.

That is for you and me to decide isn't it, this part of Sharia dictates to men that your little sisters safety is your responsibility, remember there is "no compulsion" in religion, its about how much you care, the guideline is clear you should try to walk in line.

The least you can do is arrange a safe group transport for your sister.

Trust me, influence of SA over politics is way better than being played around by America.

The Pakistan-India story may seem that simple to you, it is not, at this point in time even India does not want a amalgamated Pakistan-India and Bangladesh, why would they want to make a muslim minority a majority? What both sides could do is talk, trade and be polite.

Hell no, she isn't your responsibility. She's only your responsibility as long as she wants your help. I'll go out of my way to help my sister, wife, daughter if that be the case, but get this concept - They aren't your property! The moment she is a grown-ass woman, she ceases to be your responsibility. She is then responsible for her own actions and her own life! Of course I'll continue to wish her well, and do everything in my power to be able to help her, but I'll stop short of interfering in her life. If you guys understood this concept, there wouldn't be so much misogyny still alive and well 13 years into the 21st century :(

And no, it's not for you and me to decide what's good for the grown, adult women in our families. It's for them to decide for themselves. Try thinking of women as equals and you will realize how archaic your views sound :nono:

Think of it this way - If you were a woman, would you like somebody to keep dictating to you how to lead your life? Would you appreciate it if they constantly interfered in your life and told you what to eat, where you can go, how far you can study, what clothes you can wear and who you can marry? Or if you could ride a bike, drive a car, play sports, sing, dance or just be yourself without the world bearing down on you for just being yourself? :dunno:

Would you appreciate that as a man if your father, grandfather & brother constantly interfered in your life preventing you from doing anything that you really want to do? If not, why should things be any different for a woman? Why shouldn't they get an equal share of properties or a say in how a household is run? They are just as human as we are! No more, no less

Try to think of them as equals rather than poor, retarded 'lachaar aurats' who need to be protected and dictated to every step of the way because they're not capable enough to make their own decisions

Each adult man and woman is responsible for there own action and choices, i agree with you, i never said they weren't, nor did say i think of women as property. If you have a twisted way of thinking, that's not my problem, my statement is very general and gracious, maybe you have some deep rooted issues with how the men in your family treat the women in the family, or a observation of what muslims should do or are doing in the media, i don't know, but that's for you to deal with, don't unload on me.

I know where your going with this, your targeting our values as if they only apply to women not men, mixed with your perception of our lives, your trying to put up a picture that muslim men force the rules of Islam on there women, to a certain extent you may be right, but that does not mean Islam condones it, the guidelines are there for both men and women to follow.

The western talk of women's liberalization is nothing but the exploitation of her body, degradation of honour and deprivation of a soul. The people who claim to have uplifted the women have actually degraded them to mistresses, girl friends and society butterflies, they have no rights, hidden behind the colourful screen of art and culture making billions of dollars.

In America a man can have 5-10-20 mistresses and girlfriends, they have no rights, in Islam no mistresses allowed, when you marry a women you have to give her rights, honour, property and everything you can, that doesn't go down your throat!

Islam provides a solution for the perversion and injustice in the society, "Hijab " for women(most parts of the body covered and head) and men(similar to women), no unnecessary inter-mingling, marrying at a early age, this life is a test, you control your evil inclinations, be just and thankful, you pass.

how many time do you see musilm men in hajab (or whatever you called that when designed for men)???

usually they explained that women have to wear it because it is the expression of their modesty, the musilm modesty but 99.9% of time those same men are dressing the way they want while their girl is always hidden under some cloths.

this summer i saw a musilm couple walking down the beach, the man was in short & t-shirt, the girl was fully covered (except for face, hands & feet) in black.

the funniest bit was it seemed they were coming back from the nudist part of the beach.

in musilm world, when a woman get raped, she goes to prison because she had sex outside of marriage and because she is guilty of arrousing the rapist!!!

this life is the only thing you will have, man created god (not the other way round) and the question you have to ask yourself is 'how i want my life to be', not 'what afterlife life i want'

All this to say that men created God?! :D, just be clear from the first without talking nonsense especially the part related to rape, the rapist is punished more harder in Muslim countries than France, and if you want to talk about the validity of God existence you can open a topic about it, you are a free person especially here on nsaneforums ;)

The rules about how to dress isn't only for women. If you're interested, you could try and know more about aurah. The rules are different indeed, understandably because men and women have different anatomy. So, it cannot be said that Muslim men are dressing they way they want.

the funniest bit was it seemed they were coming back from the nudist part of the beach.

What you see isn't always what you think it seems.

this life is the only thing you will have, man created god (not the other way round)

If Muslims think that man created God, would they pray to God?

and the question you have to ask yourself is 'how i want my life to be', not 'what afterlife life i want'

See, the thing is, Muslims do believe in the afterlife. The world we're living now is just temporary (I believe many people would agree if they believe in death), and what we do here in this temporary world will affect the afterlife. You may not understand nor believe nor like it, but respecting others who have different beliefs is better, no? :)

It's perfectly fine to not understand nor believe nor like other people's beliefs/principles/whatnot, but wouldn't it be better to try and get to know more about something we don't know much about than to just throw jugdment and prejudice straight away? It's all in the perspective. What we see from the outside maybe different from what we see from the inside.

Now, to not make this post so out of topic :P About the ban on female driving cars, I think they took it a bit too much. When we talk about emergency, there are plenty of emergencies in today's world. A woman may be a breadwinner in a family. Or maybe even the sole breadwinner who needs to drive to go to work. They can't just forbid them to drive, unless maybe they want to support her and her whole family who depends on her making a living.

We are dealing with ignorant one.

They operate on pure hate searching for any way possible to channel that illogical hate.

If you confront them with logic, facts and truth they are escaping in areas of fabrications, hypocrisy and sinister concerns.

One should never lower himself on that level of conversation.

Having in mind people here are from literally everywhere and have different opinions and views,

we should have open-minded discussions of interesting topic, but on respectable level and based on facts in order for all of us to learn something new.

But reality is as soon as you create topics of a sort, for example "Your opinion on Win'8", many will start spamming "Win 8 suck", "Win 8 :sh/t:", without even explaining their views, although that same individual will just few hours later ask november_ra1n to help him activate Win 8. :O

From my reasoning "World News" should serve as collector of important news (to be informed on same changes in World Affairs, Economy, Science... ), and not comments on yt videos and similar garbage that always attracts spammers and flamers.

I'd kindly notice Staff that one mans freedom stops when the freedom of others is disturbed,

you should clearly make distinction between freedom to express your opinion and hate talk.
