Microsoft could name Windows 8.2 'Windows 9' if 8.1 is received poorly

If you asked a regular consumer their thoughts on Windows 8, they'd probably turn around and say things like 'Rubbish', why? Because everyone else says it. The same happened with Windows Vista. While Windows Vista was indeed troublesome in the beginning, Service Pack 2 changed that, but as Windows Vista was already named the worst OS, there was no saving the sinking ship.

Some could say Windows 8 is in the same boat, many aren't happy with it, many are naming it the New Vista. Windows 8.1 will hopefully point things in the right direction, but there's a high chance its too late. If so, Microsoft could do what they did with the successor of Windows Vista, name 8.2 something new. Instead of building on an OS that's already been dubbed horrible.

Microsoft may be planning to name Windows 8.2 'Windows 9' if Windows 8.1 is received poorly by consumers.

"If Windows 8 ends up perceived by the general public more positively than it is currently, Blue's successor may end up as an 8.X release; if it doesn't, Microsoft could end up going with Windows 9 just to distance itself from Windows 8." - Mary Jo Foley.

It's a good idea, as Microsoft have done something similar before. Windows 7 was built on the foundation of Windows Vista, but since Microsoft named it Windows 7, it encouraged consumers to give it another go, and they were happy. If Microsoft name Windows 8.2 'Windows 9', it could persuade them to give Windows another try.

Of course, Microsoft may not even be planning to name the successor of Windows 8.1 'Windows 8.2', we'll have to wait and see.

What do you think?

Vista was buggy which was fixed, but ended up scrapped for W7. Windows 8 design is the reason some users didn't like it. They may have fixed W8 problems with 8.1 but they haven't fixed the reason it has negative feedback in the first place.

why would you clean install 8.1 from 8..it is a free update

hey dMOg ofcourse its a free update but it has alot of issues and people arent successful updating that free update,

its cos MS wanted to bring the WP UI onto the desktop platform; and that has been their major problem. i see it in a way of promoting windows phones.

so people will opt for the windows phone over any smartphone... but Windows Phone and Windows are DIFFERENT!

What Microsoft is considering is like trying to rename "Horse Shit Burger" to sound better so you call it "Country Burger" instead, keeping the horse shit.

8 has a bit of improvement over 7 (as long as Startisback is installed). 8.1, so far to me has not been all that impressive. The search feature is a neat trick, but not much more. I have not noticed a performance increase... but maybe my expectations are too high.

exactly...win 8 with SIB is really good...in fact i started to like it more than win 7...but 8.1 is disappointing me...couldn't find any great difference in performance...i felt 8 was better...

I like Windows 8.1 over Windows 8 because of the amount of customization I could do with it. Though I personally like the Start Menu from Windows 7 (I love it :D)

I like the way the Start button is neatly sitting on my desktop. I would've preferred it to glow instead of being a a black square as if the system had a UI glitch though.

i dnt bare the fact that 8 and 8.1 has some performance improvements over 7. the only difference i can state clearly is the shutdown time, and even if u're comparing it that way u're wrong cos 8 and 8.1 doesnt shutdown, it hibernates MS has only rename hibernate to shutdown in win 8 n 8.1

What's this "metro" or "modern ui" everyone's talking about? Oh, yeah, I got rid of it COMPLETELY with Startisback+!!!!!!!!! I never have to see those stupid tiles.

Windows Vista sucked, for the reasons I will mention.

1. The name is lame.

2. The operating system was rushed and poorly worked with older software.

3. Windows 7 rocks Mario Olde Skool.

Ohh yeah I am just repeating what Sheldon said.

I disagree with your 2nd point. The OS was not rushed at all.

Windows XP was released in October of 2001.

Vista was released in January of 2007.

Microsoft was always working on their next product... but there was absolutely NO rush to do so until the very end. Windows Longhorn was hugely hyped

but there was not quality leadership within microsoft to make Longhorn come to life with out gutting it and subsequently labeling it "Vista".

Exactly Windows Vista was NO rush. Actually if you look at the stream, Vista actually look alot of time as compared to the release of various os by MS.
