Even though Windows 8.1 is supposed to be available to everyone these days, some users are still having problems when trying to download it from the Store for a number of reasons.

Now a number of Windows 8 consumers are claiming that 8.1 installation fails with a blank black screen that shows up right after several reboots.

“I updated to 8.1, the upgrade was going good, my laptop rebooted several times, then when it booted, it started up in a black screen with just a cursor in the middle, and it’s stuck in that. I tried rebooting but still same effect. The update now has made my laptop unusable!” one user wrote on Microsoft’s Community forums.

In some cases, users are provided with a 0xC1900101 - 0x40017 error pointing to an installation issue, with available options for repair, reboot, and restore.

Blank screen with a working cursor? First check HDD activity. Does it seem to be working, or it is stopped? The update takes quite a long time. On weak laptops, I imagine it could take more than an hour. Also, if you a have a second monitor connected, check that too. During installation, Windows might default on the wrong monitor.

Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 General Availability Update Rollup

***Known issues***
The following known issues may occur after you apply this update:

When you scan and send a document from a Multifunction Print (MFP) device by using the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol to a file share on a Windows 8.1 or Windows Server 2012 R2-based computer, the scan file cannot be saved to the file share and you receive an error message indicating that send operation failed.

A fix is scheduled to be included with the upcoming update rollup in November of 2013.

You experience an error when resuming a computer from hibernation, and a blank screen is shown. This issue may occur with some computers that have TPM chips enabled.

Microsoft is aware of this issue, and will be updated when a fix is available.

I've tried this update 2x tonight, going through the Windows store. Both times the update failed saying:

"Sorry we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of windows to this PC.

0x80070002 - 0x20009"

Haven't been able to find much of anything related to that error code, a google search got me 2 partial hits both in languages I don't speak. Anyone familiar with that error that can clue me in?

Just what I always wanted, a few more hassles with Windows 8 :wtf:

Error = 0x80070002

fix this problem yourself, remove the download directory, and then visit the update locations again.

  1. Stop the Automatic Updates service. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
    2. Right-click the Automatic Updates service, and then click Stop.
    3. Minimize the Services snap-in.
  2. Rename the SoftwareDistribution directory. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
    2. Type cd %windir%, and then press ENTER.
    3. Type ren SoftwareDistribution SDTemp, and then press ENTER
    4. Type exit, and then press ENTER .

Note When you remove the %windir%\softwaredistribution folder, the history list is erased from the "Review your Updates" section of the Windows Update Web site. This action will not affect the currently installed updates on your computer. Subsequent updates will appear in the history list.

  3. Start the Automatic Updates service. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Maximize the Services snap-in.
    2. Right-click the Automatic Updates service, and then click Start.
    3. Close the Services snap-in window.

Thanks tezza, appreciate it! For some reason none of the Microsoft community pages turn up in a google search -- once I checked out the page you mentioned I found some others as well. The problem is that there doesn't seem to be a focused, consistent answer on what is causing this error code -- I did run into several possibilities though. In addition to the reference you were pointing to, I also found some people discussing problems with this update, and the same error code, when they had migrated their OS to an SSD, which is the case with me and my computer. It may be that the only way around is to just have to wipe everything and start fresh on the SSD which is probably what I should have done in the first place when I bought one of those.

Anyway, we shall see. It's been another long night of attempting to decipher this disease known as Windows 8. I swear, having a computer with Win 8 is like accidentally landing an unpaid internship that just goes on and on and on, sort of like Sisyphus climbing up the mountain :)

Goodnite, and thanks again for your help!

Didn't try the beta specifically because I didn't want to be MS's unpaid beta tester. Glad I didn't have the time this morning to upgrade. I'm sticking with Win 8 till these issues are addressed. :mad2:

I think you're right, I should have been wiser about waiting to do this -- though I suspect, given how (UN)smooth everything has been with Win 8 over the past year, that moving to 8.1 might never get any better. I still can't figure out which of several gigabytes worth of files that entered my machine from Windows Store while attempting this upgrade can actually be deleted -- this is just a mess! What a garbage method of doing a major update -- windows store instead of a downloadable iso -- making it so hard to see what you're getting and what you need to be working with -- more MS utter stupidity!

The funniest part of this for me at least, is that this is probably the first time in many years I'm using a legit, legal OS, and I'm now having more problems with it than I ever had just finding an OS on ISO somewhere online, downloading and installing it, and keeping it updated. So much for doing things their way! You're better off just thumbing your nose at them and doing what's convenient for you as the end user, as it seems clear that so many of the difficulties with Win 8 are issues MS created to supposedly defeat piracy that they can't seem to defeat anyway. Wasting our time and energy so they can theorize over how to make more money! Just great!
