If you want a performance storage solution inside your PC, the only real choice is SSD. It easily beats out hard drives in terms of read and write performance, while at the same time using less power and creating no noise. However, SSDs aren’t perfect. They are expensive and their storage capacities are limited.

With that in mind, the best setup at the moment is to have a small SSD with your OS and applications installed, coupled with a large hard drive for all your data. And Western Digital has quietly announced that its Black series of performance hard drives has just got a lot faster and more reliable.

The old FAEX Black models weren’t exactly slow, but the new FZEX drives improve things in a number of areas. They retain the 7200rpm spindle speed and 64MB cache, but use a new dual-core processor and Dynamic Cache Technology to increase performance through real-time cache allocation optimization. Then there’s the use of a new High Resolution Controller that allows for “increased data precision.” In other words, a much faster drive.

So what do these improvements actually mean in real terms? Western Digital offers 1TB, 2TB, 3TB, and 4TB Black models. Below is listed the improvements to data transfer speeds for each size drive compared to the older Black models of the same size:

  • 1TB: 126MB/s -> 150MB/s
  • 2TB: 138MB/s -> 164MB/s
  • 3TB: 154MB/s -> 168MB/s
  • 4TB: 154MB/s -> 171MB/s

Western Digital claims you are going to see at least a 26 percent improvement from the new drives if using the 1TB model, but that can increase to 48 percent better performance with the 4TB drive. Of course, that depends on what you are doing with the drive.

As for reliability, the new models include Corruption Protection Technology to protect your data in the event of power loss. There’s also Vibration Control Technology to protect the discs from vibration when spinning, therefore increasing performance and reliability. The 2TB and 4TB drives also include StableTrac, which constantly monitors and stabilizes the platters when in use.

If the new Black models sounds like exactly what you need then they are shipping to retail as we speak. However, Western Digital continues to sell stock of the previous models so you need to check the packaging before purchasing. The new drives will carry a model number ending in FZEX, where as the old ones will have FAEX printed on the packaging.
