Microsoft Issues Windows XP Death Reminder Ahead of Windows 8.1 Launch

Microsoft is getting ready to launch the new Windows 8.1, but the company can’t ignore Windows XP users, as the ancient platform will be retired on April 8, 2014.

Redmond has now launched a new reminder aimed at enterprises, trying to explain once again that sticking to Windows XP beyond the retirement date is a very risky decision.

“Technology evolves and will continue to do so. Next April we'll be ending support for Windows XP, as well as Office 2003,” a post of Asavin Wattanajantra and highlighted on TechNet UK reads.

“Very simply, they don’t match up to the requirements of today’s businesses. You're demanding technology that fits the way you work inside and outside of the workplace, as well as the capability to handle the security and compliance challenges of today. XP and Office 2003, which have been around more than a decade, simply aren't up to the task any longer.”

Of course, Windows 8.1 is again promoted as a very effective alternative for Windows XP, as “it was created with the future in mind.”

What these people forget is that switching from Windows XP to the modern Windows 8.1 also requires new hardware, which in most cases is pretty expensive and turns the whole migration process into a very pricey transition.

“You’ll also need to figure out if your Windows XP apps will work on Windows 8.1, and whether you need to new hardware to run the new software on. If in doubt, contact a Microsoft accredited reseller which should be able to give you some valuable advice over Windows XP migration,” the post also reads.

Windows 8.1 is projected to be launched on October 18, while the ancient Windows XP is set to go dark next year on April 8. Both Windows 7 and Windows 8 are now advertised as the top two replacements for XP.

The rumors of XP's death have been greatly exaggerated. I don't need and don't use any "support" from Microsoft, so the unavailabilty of such "support" won't affect me in any way. If any of the software I use evolves into versions that won't work under XP, I'll simply continue to use versions that do work.

lol all MS is offering is Windows 8/8.1. Windows 7 was decently successful, there's still many on Xp but i think Xp users have spoken, they aren't moving from it. It's bad enough they won't do another service pack for Windows 7, now MS has to not only drive a stake into XP but they seem pretty intent in burying it too. XP users might as well just move to Linux, would be better off to stop hearing MS complain about people still on it. They're worse then car salesmen.

Good luck to the fanboys who wish to downgrade their Windows 8/8.1 machines to Windows 7 when they buy them.... do note that the OEM MUST have Windows 7 driver kits readily available for such a job, otherwise it wont work =)

no if the computer is not connected to internet and is only used for work, like in most of the enterprises where XP is still in use.

also XP will continue receiving updates just that will be payed updates and provided by other Enterprise but authorized by M$, that means these updates will be leaked for common users as always, so nothing to worry for the people that will continue using XP.

I'll ask all the XP sticking users one question. What's wrong with Windows 7? It's not as bad as Windows 8, it has the goodness of XP and the looks of Vista, it has far more drivers and is far more compatible with softwares, it's more secure, it's newer, it will receive all the updates, half of the internet connected world uses it, there are lots of things to say for. So why not use Windows 7 instead?

I can understand the hardware problem, but the here, it's like people just don't want to upgrade their hardware and software. They don't understand that their computer can be faster and better and more secure. In addition to that, I also blame the custom-build PC makers, for years they have used XP on the PCs they sell.

reason is simple, most of the computers that use XP are not capable to work with Windows Vista/7/8/8.1 due hardware limitations.

and start to upgrade hardware just to support a new OS is not an alternative, because is expensive, especially for enterprises.

They may turn the lights out on XP at MS but there will be thousands of XP's still running for many years to come. I know of at least a half dozen Win 98' boxes that are still on the job everyday! :D

Since Service Pack 3, I've installed no XP updates, and I've never had any problems at all with malware. And both my computers are connected to the Internet at all times. What is Avast! for?

As for Windows 7, I gave it more than a fair trial, and I just don't like it--for purely subjective reasons.

XP is just too old... you cant play a lot of the newer games on it either... because most game creators are requiring you have a 64bit OS now... however plenty of games still work on the 32bit counterparts...

NO Official DirectX10+ support for XP... DONT use unofficial support for it, lots of things can go wrong with unofficial stuff :(

I have 3 PC and 2 notebooks at home. All of them have Windows 7 expect the oldest PC. When i installed Windows 7 on it it was much slower. Not just boot time. Everything. But that was when Windows 7 was released. Maybe it was a driver problem and i should check again but i almost never use that PC. Most of the users don't care as long as it works.

If you're one of those that always needs too be on the Bleeding Edge of technology it might be better to upgrade your Computer and Operating system; However There are many thousands of users that could give a hoot as long as XP still does the job. The world won't leave you behind just because you won't jump on the I gotta have the latest whatever. People are still driving Twenty year old cars to work everyday. Try just being Happy for awhile! :)
