Matsuda
Coming as a shock to absolutely no one, the FISA court has once again approved the NSA's request to collect the phone records of everyone in the US. The NSA has been doing this for several years now, it has to appear before the court to seek a new approval every few months. And every few months, the rubber stamp court approves the request making it possible for the NSA to keep track of the phone calls of hundreds of millions of Americans. The Office of the Director of National Intelligence, aka James Clapper, revealed that the NSA made the request and that it was approved, but it's unclear whether this was just to rub it in or because this is what the US government believes transparency is. The US did reveal previously classified records on the court's decision, after the Edward Snowden leaks surfaced, of course, and it has now declassified and revealed the latest decision, which was made on Friday. "Consistent with his prior declassification decision and in light of the significant and continuing public interest in the telephony metadata collection program, DNI Clapper has decided to declassify and disclose publicly that the government filed an application with the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court seeking renewal of the authority to collect telephony metadata in bulk, and that the court renewed that authority," the DNI's office said.Source
