Matsuda
Microsoft doesn’t like to talk about the number of Windows 8 licenses sold since launch, but the company has finally provided more information in its annual proxy statement. While it again refuses to unveil any specifics, it did confirm that sales were below expectations for both Windows 8 and the Surface RT."The company faced challenges due to weakness in the consumer PC market. While the launch of Windows 8 in October 2012 resulted in over 100 million licenses sold, the challenging PC market coupled with the significant product launch costs for Windows 8 and Surface resulted in an 18% decline in Windows Division operating income. Slower than anticipated sales of Surface RT devices and the decision to reduce prices to accelerate sales resulted in a $900 million inventory charge,” it noted. In addition, the company reiterated that it sold 100 million Windows 8 licenses in only a few months, but nothing new on this front, as Microsoft said basically the same thing earlier this year. And still, it did mention that “higher sales and marketing expenses associated with the Windows 8 and Surface RT and Pro devices negatively impacted Microsoft’s overall operating income,” so the tech giant most likely expects Windows 8.1 to perform a lot better.Source

stylemessiah
If i was a shareholder looking at that (and all the figures SINCE release) i'd be sending Microsoft a simple note: "Put the fricking start menu back, and lose the stupid tiles"
xebex
Microsoft has committed one of the worst sins a business can do. They aren't listening to their customers. It is the pompous arrogant stubborn attitudes of the Microsoft executives, who are not listening to their customers that want their start button and start menus back. Microsoft refuses to do that, forcing a non productive interface to their users. It's just plain stupidity. All Microsoft has to do is add the option for the user to use the familiar Windows 7 start button and start menu, and their sales will go right up, again. I don't think, however, that Microsoft will do that. It would be admitting that Microsoft has been wrong. And we all know.... Microsoft is never wrong. How much is pride worth in lost revenue? MidnightDistortions
The start menu is definitely a big issue among users. However they have been removing other features as well like native DVD playback and Aero effects, ect.. it makes no sense. All MS seems to care about is image rather then keeping users happy. I liked using the graph disk defragmenter from XP and before but MS arrogantly removes that in Vista. Despite finding something better it's also worse, having to update it every other month for whatever reason is beyond me is so annoying. Would be better if the updates were silent. The future is ever so annoyingly frustrating.
InEvX
I tried windows 8 for about a month but fell right back to windows 7 again. Windows 7 is just a brilliant OS.

ffi
The start menu is definitely a big issue among users. However they have been removing other features as well like native DVD playback I bet you this wasn't a voluntarely decision made by MS but the result of some anti-monopoly regulation.... Freddy Anderson
I am a fan of Windows 8, but would have to admit that Windows 8 has recieved bad reviews than good which is why many people even did not bother to try it... The way i see it, a lot of online buzz and a few top IT websites featuring NERD Experts, started bullying and regarding it a bad OS, has stopped people to upgrade to Win8...
