Matsuda
Microsoft has pledged to bring more high-quality apps in the Windows Store, but it turns out that the company often approves spam entries to be listed for download.Case in point, the recently published Win 8.1 Pro HD Media Player. As you can see for yourselves on the official product page in the Store, this app is supposed to be a media player that can handle most common formats on both Windows 8 and Windows RT.In addition to a description that’s full of spelling errors, Win 8.1 Pro HD Media Player comes with a $4.99 (€3.5) price tag and no trial version, which means that users who wish to give it a try have no other option than to pay for a full license. The description pretty much says it all about the app:“Windows MediaPlayer is a 32/64-bit media player for Microsoft Windows 8 Operating System. This App is a Media Player that allows you to open or browse the folders directly from media library, DVD drive and Pen drive. It supports many controls like ● Play ●Pause ● Stop ● Volume...”As a conclusion, make sure you double-check every app you plan to buy on Windows 8, as some of them could be nothing more than spam supposed to steal your money.Source

calguyhunk
99% of apps in the store are worthless shit, as I've said before, and half of good apps you may as well just use the browser (why use Amazon or eBay full screen?).I hate this entire "App" culture. Tech never got dumbed down this much this fast before :(

calguyhunk
I hate this entire "App" culture. Tech never got dumbed down this much this fast before :(I kinda prefer it on my phone, I'll tinker with my PC all I want but I prefer the iPhone experience on a mobile device. But it is really bad for a full desktop PC, and I worry they may try to cripple non-apps in the pursuit of profit. The most well designed Metro app can be outclassed by a Desktop app, why use Dropbox on crippled and fullscreen mode vs the copy I have installed on the Desktop? When by "Apps" you mean games, productivity, or (root) apps to tinker with your phone, yeah, they're great. But I just don't get the website apps though, seriously. Especially, with ever growing screen sizes, why the heck would you need an Expedia or Amazon app when it's really just as easy to go to the damn site directly just like you would on your good old PC!What makes me really uncomfortable is how a lot of 'em ask for permission to use your geo-location and other personally identifiable info. to give you a "better experience" when referring you a restaurant or a movie theater. I installed the Zomato app and it was really creepy how it always knew exactly where I'm at within literally a yard!!! :angry:Also, apps use more data than websites as well. And data is expensive! So yeah, no "apps" for me. Only applications/programs to make my phone look, feel and work just the way I want to  Edited October 3, 2013 by calguyhunk
