Next-gen console games will be storage hogs

Just how many games will you be able to install on the next generation of game consoles? Not many, if Sony's Killzone: Shadow Fall (shown above) is any indication.

The PlayStation 4 exclusive takes up about 50GB of space on the console's hard drive, Eurogamer reports. Both the PS4 and Microsoft's Xbox One ship with 500GB of storage, so you might be able to install a dozen games or so before running out of room.

On the bright side, users may not have to wait long to play their downloaded games. Both Sony and Microsoft are promising “play-as-you-download” functionality on their consoles.

Still, the storage limitations could be an issue for early adopters, just as it was for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The two consoles initially shipped with 20GB of storage and, over the years, new models were introduced with roomier hard drives.

Storage became troublesome for these early models as more games required installations, and the file sizes of downloadable games increased. Grand Theft Auto V, for instance, requires more than 8GB of hard-drive space. Microsoft's Halo 4 requires a 3.5GB installation to access the game's multiplayer components.

If history repeats itself, early Xbox One and PS4 buyers will have to be careful about storage management, or shell out for additional storage in the future. Sony, at least, will allow users to replace their hard drives with any size they like. Xbox One storage is non-removable. Microsoft says support for external drives is on the way, but it won't be available at launch.

It sounds like all the more reason to keep playing disc-based games, but keep in mind that both the Xbox One and PS4 will install content from the disc as you play. The result will be faster load times and improved performance, as well as an inevitable storage crunch.
