Matsuda
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6QGrv7JbzjUWindows 8.1 is just around the corner, so Microsoft keeps talking big about the update that's supposed to make the core operating system a lot more familiar and appealing to all user categories.Nothing unusual until now, but the tech giant is now using the Start button to promote Windows 8.1, saying that it helps people get stuff done quicker and easier. While this is indeed true, the Start button was actually removed in Windows 8 and reimplemented into 8.1 after intense criticism coming from both users and analysts. Microsoft had a change of heard earlier this year and decided to bring back the Start button to help consumers quickly get to the Start screen.Even though it doesn't launch a Start Menu, it's still proof that the voice of users can sometimes be heard in Redmond, especially when sales are dramatically affected.Source Edited September 29, 2013 by Matsuda

dMog
microsoft failed to see that most users for win8 would NOT be using touch screens and because if that lost sight made the OS for touch screen use and forgot about regular pc users... nothing wrong with the OS as a whole.... second party start button software was readily at hand and lets face it.... the strength of microsoft OS has always been the ability to easily tweak it...no matter what the version or flavor
Nastrahl
The regular keyboard/mouse use is unchanged since 30 years so there's no reason they should talk about it in those kind of ad, but they do add something newer with the support of touch screen so it's logical to bring this up.Still, it doesn't prevent the use of a keyboard and a mouse not degrade it ; in fact they actually optimized it by adding a lot of shortcuts with the Windows key that really speed up usability of the system ; and we are fine not using the ModernUI screen if we don't want to. So there's no reason to rage about it.
David
they didn't forget that a major of people is still using a keyboard and a mouse.... they tried to change once again and instead of hearing the beta testers and many people the continue with the same idea thinking they where correct..im a little sad about having to work with this ugly GUI too... MidnightDistortions
Keyboard and mouse is here to stay, if everyone wanted touch on their desktops they would have done it already. I knew you could make it happen with Windows 7 but i still have my old CRT monitor from '99. Even though Windows 8 does work with the mouse/keyboard it's awkward using the mouse on the start screen. i don't think the start button will help with W8 usage.Windows is a Graphics User Interface. Users should be able to use it the way they want to, not what a company or what some people think it should be like, at least on desktops and laptops. The hybrids are interesting and will most likely replace laptops once they get it done well. I mostly use desktops and i just use my laptop or phone when i am out. LeeSmithG
As a P.C. user and not a tablet user, infact I will never use a tablet or a cell phone.I want an operating system that has a G.U.I. like all operating systems since windows 95.I want a proper start button.I want a new and improved operating system, with a start button some newer features, but with a proper start button.I don't want third party install of a start button.I think I can speak for around 90% of the general public, we want a proper start button and G.U.I. similar to 7 and XP.I thought Microsoft TM had learn't their lessons from Windows Millennium and Windows Vista. MidnightDistortions
What makes me laugh with this is that.no matter what happens one day you will all upgrade.unless you want to be left vulnable..so good luck :)Except you don't need Windows to access the internet. Just saying, i have been using Linux for the internet and haven't had any problems yet but eventually MS will have no choice but to give users options. As i said computers all have GUI's.. if people are forced to use a certain one when they prefer other ones then they will do what they can to get the one they prefer even if it's vulnerable. MS is failing to get XP users off not only because people don't like W8 but because of software incompatibilities. While true, they should upgrade to the next OS but again they seem pretty determined to use what they have. We'll just have to wait until XP loses support to see what happens. I've seen users never update XP and their system runs fine so only the future can really say what will really happen. All i can say is i am moving to Linux and might have to make some sacrifices but MS misses the point in why people are not upgrading to W7 or W8 and that's not going to be any different with 8.1. LeeSmithG
What makes me laugh with this is that.no matter what happens one day you will all upgrade.unless you want to be left vulnable..so good luck :)Well no.Windows 7 will have 10 years more support, by that time is up, it will be Windows TM 8, 9, 10 & 11.Microsoft TM by then will get the message, we are happy with (most of us are) with Windows 7/ XP style G.U.I.Most people use computers, for email, chat and buying online.Me, I do those three and hundreds more.I can see Linux getting very excited, as they will get heaps more customers.Apple, I never likes their chic.
