Security researchers have come across a new version of the Reveton ransomware that’s designed to help cybercriminals make a profit by engaging in Bitcoin mining.

Most pieces of ransomware work the same way. They lock the infected computer’s screen and ask for the payment of a so-called fine to have it unlocked. If the victim agrees to pay the ransom, the crooks make a profit. If the victim refuses to pay, the attackers don’t make any money.

However, the new Reveton malware analyzed by Malwarebytes researchers helps the cybercriminals make a profit regardless of whether or not the victim agrees to pay up.

That’s because in addition to locking the screen, the threat also downloads and executes a Bitcoin miner.

Experts say the malware was likely created by two different developers, one focusing on the lock screen functionality, and the other on the Bitcoin mining.

Take a look at the gallery to see what the lock screens of this Reveton ransomware look like.

if they would use there brains to make it safe on the web ? instead of this way. then they would earn money. so this smart (people) think they get money?

if whe all make something , so whe do not need a antivirus program and ban all virus and ransom - begware out of the internet. then i think they could even earn some money.

so as there are people at bleeping computers that makes such nice software to get rid of this ransom - begware , i think whe better sponsor them to make it ven better.

i hope it stops. (i did never have problems with this kind) but there are people out ther that can say , it cost alot of money to go to the store to get rid of it.

(sorry for the bad english - dutch guy) i work in a computer store and have a dayly fight with this sort of malwares. not that it is so bad but it is very nasty for the customer.

i use rogue killer - adware cleaner - combofix to clean up this mess. also hirens bootcd for nasty ones that not let you to boot in safe mode or other way's.

there are more free things to use for cleaning up . but i want to hold it short . if some one would to now (how to) i could give some suggestions.

I had a friend who's dad's computer got infected with this or a variant of this...he smashed his computer out of fear. I told my friend that it was malware and not a real threat but it was too late.

I hate these cockroaches and I hope they all die in a hole. Pathetic losers with nothing better to do than to prey on others. And where's that Orwellian state when it comes to catching these guys...oh yeah that's right governments are also only good for preying on those that can't defend themselves, that is after all so much easier. If we have such talented intelligent people trying to find cyber criminals then where are the results?
