The Lavabit mailservice suspended operations

I've been using occasionally this, some may have found exotic, e-mail service :).

It is now gone.

The letter of the site's owner and operator - find pasted below.

**The 'cute', cool part I highlighted in orange :)

Well, sounds familiar maybe?

My Fellow Users,

I have been forced to make a difficult decision: to become complicit in crimes against the American people or walk away from nearly ten years of hard work by shutting down Lavabit. After significant soul searching, I have decided to suspend operations. I wish that I could legally share with you the events that led to my decision. I cannot. I feel you deserve to know what’s going on--the first amendment is supposed to guarantee me the freedom to speak out in situations like this. Unfortunately, Congress has passed laws that say otherwise. As things currently stand, I cannot share my experiences over the last six weeks, even though I have twice made the appropriate requests.

What’s going to happen now? We’ve already started preparing the paperwork needed to continue to fight for the Constitution in the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. A favorable decision would allow me resurrect Lavabit as an American company.

This experience has taught me one very important lesson: without congressional action or a strong judicial precedent, I would _strongly_ recommend against anyone trusting their private data to a company with physical ties to the United States.

Sincerely,
Ladar Levison
Owner and Operator, Lavabit LLC

It just gets increasingly scary. I can only imagine what kind of government demands Ladar Levison received that would have led him to do this. I think the real task now is to attempt to figure out where to move all the gigabytes of data company's like Google (and my gmail accounts) contain. Is there any online storage or movement that can be safe and private any longer? Is there any way to "erase" the intrusions that have already occurred? What are some of the nsane members doing about those type of concerns? Are there any trustworthy resolutions or have we all just been "had" related to our (over)trust of online resources?

I was wondering what are the chances that this is all a big set up and a bluff? The terrorists rely on the internet to communicate with each other without internet giving different cells orders/plan would be much harder. Maybe Snowden, who looks like a commie, I mean who in their right mind would give him a job in national security... was fed false info about the internet espionage capabilities of the NSA hoping he would leak the info, so the terrorists would believe they cannot use the internet anymore to communicate...

Snowden wasn't fed flase info, he even said that he was allowed to use some of the email programs that allow you to check other peoples emails simply by knowing what thier email adress is. Snowden is a hero to the people, a criminal to the government. He is exposing the criminal elemtns which are expanding more and more and a lot of people feel a sort of snug feeling knowing that Big Brother is watching you, feeling like they care about you. They don't.

A carefully crafted plan is being crried out. One thing for sure, the people in the USA can't fathom all that they are about to face.

An article that explains a bit more about this story is on the NY Times website. Here's the link for those seeking a bit more info about it....

http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/08/08/two-providers-of-encrypted-e-mail-shut-down/?hp&_r=0

Thanks a lot for the follow-up story!

It's quite interesting...

Edward Snowden had been using Lavabit (reportedly)...nice

@mray88 and all curious, not heard it yet:

There is one thing called TorMail...not so easy to install and configure though (Tor hidden services needed + more).

Link:

http://tormail.org/

I truly hope nobody would use it for malicious purposes (if learning about it from here; and in principle, of course).

Cheers! :)

I don't know much about tormail but will check it out some -- thanks. I do recall reading something just recently though about how one of the tor servers was passing along data to a government source,... something like that. Maybe they can't really be relied on either. We're really in a bind with all of this. Most of us use these services (like gmail) to such a degree that it's difficult to figure out how to get away from them, no less how to eradicate all the info they already have on you -- doing that is probably impossible at this point. It's sad, at this point I'm looking to give up U.S. citizenship altogether. I just can't stand behind what's become of my home.

Funny that you mention a concern over "malicious" behavior. You know, there's people in the U.S. now who are of the point of view that if you really find your privacy so important that you must be up to no good! Because of that I no longer even attempt to define what constitutes a good or a bad reason for wanting your affairs to remain private. The fact is, a desire for privacy seems like it's enough, in and of itself. It should not require any further explanations.

Thanks for the link. Unfortunately, it will have to wait till next month, as I've already used up my free articles for this month.

hey keyman, I use adblock and ccleaner and never have any difficulty reading as many articles as I like on the Times website. Their article blocking is based on cookies, so if you just delete your cache and cookies you will have no problem. If you are using Chrome and you don't want to install something like adblock or ccleaner, just go to "settings" in the upper right drop down menu, click "advanced settings" towards the bottom of the page, then click on "clear browsing data". If none of that works for you, pm me an email address and I will send you a .pdf of the article. I tried to see if I could pm the pdf to you here, but trying to copy it into the pm system rendered it all screwy looking so I gave up.

Hope that helps!

  • 1 month later...

Was just reading an article printed today on the NY Times website that further updated this story. Apparently documents related to the situation were unsealed by a Court this week. Fascinating story! Really have to hand it to this guy who ran Lavabit -- he fought back despite knowing that it was going to be a losing battle. Here's the link if you're interested --
