nsane.forums
A petition to Microsoft is asking for the software giant to bring back TechNet, or create an affordable alternative to MSDN, after it was announced TechNet would be closing its doors very soonMicrosoft announced earlier this month that they would be retiring TechNet starting on August 31st, saying they would not accept any new or renewed subscriptions after this date. TechNet has been used by many IT professionals and software evaluators to try out Microsoft's array of products for a relatively low yearly price, so this announcement was received poorly by the community. With the move, MSDN becomes the only true subscription service available that gives access to the full array of Microsoft products; however it costs significantly more, as base subscriptions start at $699 as opposed to just $199 for TechNet. The price hike has caused a petition (the second petition to Microsoft this week) to bring back TechNet, or alternatively provide an affordable alternative to MSDN.The petition on Change.org reads:IT Professionals and ISVs need affordable access to Microsoft products normally accessed through TechNet. Please continue TechNet or create an affordable alternative to MSDN subscriptions minus Visual Studio and associated developer tools. Currently, the only comparable MSDN subscription costs $6120.Currently the petition has almost 3,000 signatures out of a required 5,000 with the organizer, Cody Skidmore, asking for people to "double down on the pressure" and to not assume that Microsoft will easily back-peddle and reinstate TechNet. If you would like to see TechNet brought back, head to the source link and sign the petition.Petition.View: Original Article
LiLmEgZ
MSDN and TechNet were always super expensive to become a member.... I never joined and could care less.... although it would've been nice to be a member for a few things they hosted up there :P
Beamslider
I doubt that Microsoft will pay attention to this. They have been lowering the number of MAK keys given out for the past couple years with technet. Why? Could it be all the people that went for technet subs and then sold the keys on eBay. Or maybe the guy that went with technet and then installed, maybe charged to install software on computers? The way it was abused...MS was bound to close it down. Cody Skidmore
Actually, TechNet Professional costs $350 the first year and $250 for renewal. Considering the massive product access granted, I and many others consider TechNet to be very affordable. As to whether Microsoft will pay attention or not, Janet Gibbons, Partner Strategy and Program Director for Microsoft in the UK said in an interview on 11 July 2013 Microsoft is aware of the uproar closing TechNet caused, and Microsoft is listening to our community while considering a decision. I don't blame you for being skeptical, but you can bet Microsoft will absolutely close TechNet if we choose to just lay down. The petition mentioned above received 3,700 signatures at the time of this posting. It will likely reach 4,000 in the next four hours. We are asking for your help convincing Microsoft of the folly in closing TechNet. Please join us.Respectfully,Cody Skidmore
