Google Chrome is dominating the browser industry

Google Chrome raced onto the scene just five years ago; a time period when Internet Explorer had entrenched itself as the undisputed leader. The browser became so popular that mid last year it was already disputing the lead with Microsoft's counterpart. Now, according to recent reports from web statistics firm StatCounter, Google has firmly taken the top spot in the browser market, and not by a small margin either.

According to June's data, Chrome holds a global market share of 43%, while IE lags behind at 25%. Meanwhile, Firefox services approximately 20% of the online population, with Safari and Opera coming in fourth and fifth.

Its interesting to note that Chromes dominance may be even greater than the stats indicate, seeing as much of Microsofts market share is tied to business use. Offices often have Internet Explorer set as the default browser and employees inherently use the system out of convenience. As a result, StatCounters statistics show that Microsofts market share undergoes a sizeable loss on weekends. If employers eventually make the transition to rivals Firefox and Chrome, then Internet Explorers days could be numbered.

Some might be curious as to how Google rose to the top so quickly. After all, Microsoft effectively held a monopoly over the industry, and Firefox was a hit for those wanting a speedier interface and greater customization. Neowin @ http://www.neowin.net/news/statcounter-june-2013-google-chrome-reigns-supreme-ie-comes-in-secondsuggests that much of Chromes success can be attributed to its presence on the Android line of mobile devices. Unfortunately for Apple, the iPhone has failed to bring Safari the same loyal following, or at least not in any meaningful way considering Safari is confined to OS X's smaller market share on desktops.

However compelling the StatCounter results may be @ http://gs.statcounter.com/#browser-ww-monthly-201206-201306, these figures do not tell the whole story. StatCounter tracks using page views, while most would agree that the number of users is of greater importance.

The reason Chrome is number one is very simple, Google advertising it on Google.com.

One of the reasons, if it was crap even advertising will not help, they are just doing a great job, a very powerful browser, I love its simplicity, fast with nice extensions, I'm using it since version 5 (If I have a good memory ^^)

Sure. But Chrome started loosing marketshare when Google had stopped advertising it on Google.com. Of course, that was for small amount of time (couple of months I think) and the advertising of Chrome on Google.com was back.

Yes Maybe, and we users do advertising too by recommending..., I see Firefox as the real competitor but it still far in speed, I hope the best for it

I honestly do not see the fascination of Chrome. I have tried it a few times but its just lacking in so many areas compared to FF its just not worth it. I ditched IE about 8 years ago for FF and never went back. Cant see myself doing that to FF any time soon.

Chrome is the best. Just accept it guys...

There is nothing to accept unless you have some sort of reasoning for your assertion?

I used to browse the internet using Firefox, then ditched it for Firefox... now I'm on Internet Explorer, I've been using IE10 since april 2011, and IE11 since march 2013. I'm definitely happier with IE than with other browser ever released. I use sometimes Firefox as well because IE11 has some problems on DeviantART for example... it's understandable because Windows 8.1 with IE11 is still just a preview

chrome sure has speed on expense of more ram usage

chrome=each tab+extension act like a alone process so speed is obvious

see task manager if you dont believe me

which is not the case in firefox

dont think me a chrome hater i use them both and love them both!

Yeah Google Chrome is great if you like supporting a company that tracks everything you do and then shares that information with the government. However if a company with some actual values is more your cup of tea then Mozilla Firefox is your drug of choice. Plus Firefox let's you group your tabs which is a feature that I utilize again and again when I have a million tabs open. Google = We Are Evil. Nothing would make me happier than watching the company crash into the dirt from whence it came.

Saying that a browser is 'best' is always subjective, unless its very clearly defined what constitutes a best browser.

MidnightDistortions

I use all 3 of them (not regularly of course) but mainly Chrome because it saves my favorites and other stuff online so no matter what PC i access i can just log into my account and i got all my stuff. I thought it would work with extensions as well but some of them don't seem to work on other machines other than the main PC i am using. I haven't investigated further tho but for the most part i just find Chrome to be convenient to use. I think the spell check could improve though, it doesn't really give me the right suggestions yet when i google that word the right one pops right up, it's weird.

I need 2 things.

1. Customizable: the currently available Chrome addons are good for me.

2. Fast: this is why Firefox is my second browser but i see that they are improving. If you don't use addons with Firefox or just 2 or 3 then Firefox is fast but as soon as you install 10 or more addons then it starts slower and works slower. This is not a problem with Chrome. I have 15 addons in Chrome and it is very fast.
