Microsoft has removed the Windows Experience Index feature from the preview version of Windows 8.1, apparently ending a feature to label a PC's performance that started with Windows Vista.

Windows 8.1 may add a number of new features to Microsoft's latest OS, but it is also removing some features as well, such as the Messaging app. Now it appears the public preview of Windows 8.1 has put an end to a feature that was originally put into Windows Vista back in 2007.

As spotted by McAtkins Online, the preview build of Windows 8.1 does away with the Windows Experience Index, which was set up by Microsoft to give PC owners a quick way to determine the overall hardware performance on their computer. At the time of its introduction over six years ago, Microsoft indicated this would provide an easier method to find out if a software application would be able to run on an owner's PC.

In practice, however, there was very little use of the Windows Experience Index by outside software makers, who continued to use the typical hardware requirements labels to give consumers the info on their products. The Windows Experience Index was, in fact, not put into Windows RT when it was released in October 2012, but Windows 8 still had the feature. Now it looks like Microsoft has removed the index entirely with the Windows 8.1 public preview. We have emailed Microsoft to get a more concrete reason why the Windows Experience Index was not included in Windows 8.1.

Now wtf was wrong with WEI? Yes, it was pretty much useless but it was useful in understanding the power of the individual parts of your hardware, irrespective what the main score is.

Aero is enabled automatically by default if you have installed & updated your video drivers properly.

Or by enabling an Aero theme...? There was nothing wrong with WEI.

btw, imho is not a good idea remove this feature, because it was useful for the common users that does not know computer's technical details, so it helps them to compare these score points between PCs, but now they will not have idea what computer is better than other.

97% of normal windows users would have never seen the WEI, would not know what it meant, nor care it has been removed.

WinSAT formal still works

Almost all of my n00b friends and families knew about this feature within 1 month of them buying a PC / laptop. And these n00bs I'm talking about still used non-updated IE as their main browser.

@DKT

They will be in the 3% then :P

Your average user having bought a used or store bought pc, based on price and their requirements from that pc, and eveything works as it should , why would they suddenly become interested to find out their WEI or even know it exists.

Why is MS doing this? I found WEI the first day it came out & i found it useful in what hardware i need to upgrade before it becomes a problem. Eventually MS will get rid of any feature that is any good in WIndows.

It had no actual use, in general day to day work. For example, Start Menu and Aero Glass has actual day to day use, but WEI didn't. What WEI was useful however, is to keep track of the power of your hardware, which, there's no other easy, n00b friendly way in the world to do that.

Surely someone will either replace the functionality or supply something superior. I have used it in screentickets showing on display model laptops to help customers determine what they're getting performance wise.

The gaming score was generally a complete crock of shit but the CPU and memory scores were useful. The HDD score would have been useful if they'd allowed it to go over the cap of 5.9, sometimes you'd have an SSD cache

and the WEI didn't factor that in at all.

I wish they'd keep it and improve it a little. I don't think it's bloat. I don't like how they keep removing useful stuff just cos.
