I can't remember off the top off my head what it's called (as Im in work), however my pc is set to boot up at 5pm (can be set to anytime) every evening, using some option in the bios (not wake on lan, possibly resume by alarm)

I then have a Vtask script setup which does various things, like backing up, moving specified files, once it's complete it then shuts down.

Of course this is BIOS specific, and you no doubt would need a image maker (like Acronis) or something similar which can be passed commands via command prompt (less coding required), but it's perfectly viable without much hacking.

Now I do run Acronis, and I've just googled, it seems it does take command line args, so your idea shouldn't be an issue as long as you have resume by alarm.

Regards
Dodel.
