WinRAR 5.00 Beta 6

WinRAR is a powerful archive manager providing complete support for RAR and ZIP archives and is able to unpack CAB, ARJ, LZH, TAR, GZ, ACE, UUE, BZ2, JAR, ISO, 7Z, Z archives. Its RAR format may only take second place for its level of compression – but it is consistently the fastest when it comes to both packing and unpacking files. While RAR files are not native to Windows or Mac, many other compression programs are still capable of unpacking it. WinRAR is available on Windows, OSX, and Linux, despite the name.

Thanks to Tyan Tiger for the update.

This release is a disappointment, for me - the only one improvement that's been made is at level RAR5 (a format that is not yet universally adopted and compliant.) :(

RAR5 has a sliding dictionary size, if you pick a high number, a very neat solution.

Apart from that it has been simplified for now. So indeed, it's not about great improvements, but it's rock solid.

We don't need any lessons on rar5. :coolwink:

Personally, rar5 is more than welcome - however, the tallest hurdle to rar5 is that it cannot be shared as a redistributable (unless all recipients are running - at least, the V5 version of WinRAR.) It does not does not enjoy the wide compatibility that one currently enjoys with .rar, .zip. .7z, etc., etc.

The benefits of the new rar5 are just not catching on - the highly advanced zipx, a corresponding format which was introduced by close competitor WinZip years ago has still failed to be embraced universally.

I'm afraid rar5 has a long way to go - improvements on that front mean hardly anything, ATM. Hopefully, some years down the line when rar5 grows into the suo-moto global standard - such kind of an improvement should be able to tickle my testicle.

As for lessons, I don't feel called upon, but have read the post you refer to now. It did not mention the info yet, that dictionary is handled different as of WinRAR 5 beta 4.

I wonder if winzip developers were forced to come up with a new zipx extension. If not, it must have been a 'bright' morning when they made that decision.

Actually, when one receives a WinZip file, ending with zipx - one immediately realizes that the file calls for a higher (later) version of WinZip.

However, when one receives the higher (later) version of the new WinRAR (rar5) there are absolutely no signs to warn the Recipient(s) since the file does not end with rar5 - it ends with a file extension identical to the lower (older) version, rar (I wish they had at least, kept it as rarx instead of just rar)
