Sony CEO: PlayStation 4 will be made for games and gamers first

Sony CEO Kaz Hirai said today that their upcoming PlayStation 4 console has been designed "first and foremost as a game console" but hinted non-gaming features will also be a part of the product.

So far, Sony has concentrated on showing off how its upcoming PlayStation 4 console handles games made for its hardware and software. That's in sharp contrast to the message that Microsoft has presented at first for its Xbox One console, which it has marketed as more of a multimedia entertainment box that happens to play games.

Microsoft has promised to concentrate on promoting the games made for the Xbox One at its E3 2013 press conference in less than two weeks. In the meantime, Sony doesn't seem to be in a rush to talk about the possible non-gaming features for the PS4. AllThingsD.com reports that, during a Q&A at the All Things Digital conference today, Sony CEO Kaz Hirai said flat out, "We take a look at this first and foremost as a game console."

He added that it was important to Sony that the PS4 reaches out to gamers first out of the gate, adding, "If we miss that part then I don’t think we get the initial establishment of the console." However, he hinted that more non-gaming entertainment features will be revealed for the PS4 "in the coming months."

This move on Sony's part is basically the same angle it took when it first introduced the PS3 in 2006, as it also focused on games first and then later added support for streaming video apps and downloadable movies and TV shows in the PlayStation Store. It will be interesting to see if Microsoft or Sony's marketing approach for their next generation consoles will succeed.
