A Reddit user's Samsung Galaxy S III has self-combusted while charging, saying he heard loud noises, saw smoke coming from the device and managed to get burned from the melting phone.

A Reddit user has witnessed his Samsung Galaxy S III self-combust while charging, saying the entire phone caught fire right before his very eyes. vizionx1208 heard a loud noise, followed by some weird squeaking noises, while he was sleeping beside his charging smartphone, only to wake up and see smoke pouring from the device and producing a horrible smell.

Thankfully the user realized that his phone was beginning to catch fire and dumped some water on the device, but not before the phone began to melt and spit plastic about the place, lightly burning one of his fingers. Taking a look at the battery after the self combustion reveals what looks like a bulging sack of fluid, rather than the usual slim Galaxy S III battery.

What could have caused this self combustion? Likely there was something wrong with the battery, with the two electrodes potentially combining inside the casing to cause a chemical reaction that produces a lot of heat very quickly. Hopefully someone at Samsung gets in touch with the owner of the now-dead phone to at least offer a replacement device, if not a few freebies for having his phone explode right before his eyes.

Now Nokia will sue them for violating their "combust while charging the phone" patent. :P

this is very old news, besides the owner later had to admit fraud, his phone got wet and he tried to dry it in the microwave

You got it wrong. I thought Apple holds that patent too. In any case, they'll happily sue Samsung any given day LOL!

Nope. Apple doesn't hold that patent (yet), only Nokia does. However, that won't stop them from suing Samsung. :P

Shhh ... Timmy cook will hear you

BTW, do you mean to say that there's a patent that Apple doesn't hold? Now that's just blasphemy! In any case, to be fair to Nokia, we've left those BL-5C cases behind us methinks ;)

Jokes apart. It seems that Nokia phones don't seem to have that problem anymore. :)

I personally would actually prefer their smartphone marketshare staying bad, so that they consider giving Android a go, think about it, Android and Nokia combination, Samsung might bite the dust, but no, it has to stick with Windows Phone. -_- However, seeing them loose in cell phone business to crappy companies like Karbonn, Maxx mobile, etc. (we've discussed this before :P ) is something I don't prefer to see. Still think they make the best cell phones.

+1.

I think a lot of us would prefer that too. Nokia still makes the best cell-phones in terms of hardware specs and reliability  Nokia + Android (with an unlocked bootloader :dribble: ) is a fantasy that a lot of gadget freaks and geekboys will have harbored over the years including yours' truly :D

More than anything else, this way the prices would come down (better hardware at the same price points  ) 'cuz with Nokia peddling basically the same devices, nobody will pay Samsung/HTC the huge premiums they enjoy on their Android smartphones

The problem is that MS & Nokia has signed an agreement (albeit 'non-exclusive') whereby MS provided funds for Nokia's smartphone research in 2011 when Google declined to meet Microsoft's offer to Nokia. That's because Google realized that Nokia needs them more than the other way 'round ;)

Although at first Nokia seemed open to the idea of Nokia droids, they seem to have decided otherwise over the last couple of years :(

Now that being the case, we're stuck with uber-expensive Android handsets in a virtual Samsung/LG/Sony/HTC monopoly (quadropoly if you will) with traditional PC makers like Lenovo, Asus etc. not making much of a headway and Dell, HP, Acer etc. not even taking a serious look at the smartphone market. :(

Once (if) that happens, the commoditization of smartphones will be complete and prices for the end consumers will fall precipitously

@cal: Yup, it would be fun to see an Android Nokia phone.

This mega earn profit nonsense was started by Apple and it's high time it stops.

Eitherway, from what I came to know (from Neowin - which is full of MS fanboys), no Android seller other than Samsung is making profit in smartphone business, not even HTC, makes me wonder why (inspite of such huge margins).

Then the s4 one will get vaporized, I guess. At night you put your cell on charging, wake up in the morning and you will say, " Where the hell is my phone?"
