During today's Google I/O keynote, the company announced that its Chrome web browser now has 750 million monthly active users, with 300 million new users added in the last 12 months.

Google's Chrome web browser is either more popular that Microsoft's Internet Explorer, if you buy StatCounter's numbers, or less popular if you think Net Applications has the right data. Today, Google gave some hard numbers at least in terms of the users of Chrome as part of its Google I/O keynote.

At the moment, Google says there are now 750 million monthly active users for the Chrome browser, adding that 300 million new users have started using Chrome just in the last 12 months. The presentation did not break down just how many of those Chrome users were on mobile devices, with the company stating only that the mobile use is "growing."

The keynote showed off a Chrome demo of a web browser experience made to promote the next movie in The Hobbit triolgy, showing that the website runs just as well on a Nexus 10 tablet with the Chrome browser as it does on a Chromebook Pixel laptop.

The keynote also talked briefly about the Chrome OS and Chromebooks, saying that the $249 Samsung Chromebook has been the number one best selling laptop on Amazon.com for 190 straight days. Google said they will offer more information about the future of the Chrome OS later this year.

Title should be:

750 million active data sources

On the front page on one side this is under Software News

Meanwhile under Security & Privacy News is:

Skype with care – Microsoft is reading everything you write

Anyone else see the problem here?

MS getting http links from your skype conversations (almost certainly a benign and appropriate check for safety for the user) gets stuffed under Security & Privacy News, while Chrome goes under Software News instead?

Perhaps they should be swapped over on the front page?

I weep for anyone using Chrome and drinking that Kool Aid, when they finally wake up to how they are actively contributing to their data getting mined, it will of course be too late....

This is insane... Do you really think that only Google needs your data? Today data collecting is a main job for every company. Nothing wrong with that until they aren't using it against you. They need data to make better products and for better advertising. Deal with it.

Well, it's got a wider & more powerful support for add-ons - the most important advantage for me is the availability of the x64-bit version (Nightly - the best browser . . . . . ever.)

In fact, the number is still very small, and besides - a statistical rather than real.

But who still twists the dog's tail, if not the dog itself. It's just advertising.

And the paper suffers from anything. Anyone can not control, write what you want.

And then more to lie, then more it is believed.

Why do you care about Firefox? You're not using it.If you like Chrome stick with it.

It all comes down to personal preference.

I believe this thread will convert into Chrome vs Firefox vs Opera vs IE.

From what has happened to other browsers like IE and Opera, there's future in Firefox as far as speed is concerned, but Firefox isn't considered "cool" anymore, hence, we might never see it back in the public.
