ESET v4 Fixes

Recommended Posts

I manually check for an Update and it then says Update is not necessary - the virus sigs are up to date, I restart and the loop begins again.

Hoca,

The latest signature database is 3984 - can you do a manual update and confirm this immediately.

I have not yet found any box/mara- fix being identified as a virus by ESET? (apart from an older one for ESET 3.x BoxMaraEset3Fix_Uninstall.exe) though I have always installed ESET 3.x/4.x without Threatsense.net being enabled, as I felt this was overkill and just offered ESET a further excuse to call home? I would have thought you get all you need from the virus signatures, so I do not see the need for Threatsense.net? And I have certainly never been affected by a virus whilst using ESET (from 2.7 onwards) only a malware problem (as severe as it was! :tooth: ) as described earlier in the forum.

I have purposely scanned the new box, mara- fix v1.0 with ESS 4.0.417 and it said it was clean, I even enabled Potentially Unsafe/Unwanted Application and it still felt it was ok? What is going on? :s Do we have any evidence at all that Threatsence.net informs ESET products about new viruses and not just up to date info on the latest medicines available? ;)

Are you sure it told you it was clean? I just scanned it here and it tells me it's not clean.

I think the problem might be this, inside the Eset Fix.exe there are multiple files, i's somewhat like an archive I suppose. Two questions: do you have 'only scan files with ... extension' turned on and do you have 'scan inside archives' turned on?

Dang, mara-, hadn't have much time to talk to you, but today I'll be on for some time, hope I run into you :P

@Hoca

Dong is 100% not from the fix. I done many, many tests and I never hear it. I did one test 3 min ago and it is OK. You are correct about the loop. But that will disappear after you get next signature update. I'll make workaround for that, I just got the idea how to do it.

Cheers ;)

NodEnabler 3.0 is now available.

Changes:

+Now supports version 4 ESET software when self-defence is turned on. Similar to the way NodLogin does it, but much faster and more reliable. Cheers to all the Windows 7 users for reporting their experiences with the old version of NodENabler, this version trys the old method first and then if it fails, uses the new one.

+Now waits for one to five minutes for internet access before trying to check the existing license (one minute with no network connection at all, five when there is a network connection but no route to the internet). No more wifi issues.

+Should now work with http proxy servers. It uses the same settings as Internet explorer (and so needs it installed on the computer to work). I don't have access to a proxy to test it.

+Made some changes to the uninstaller to make it much smarter, and next to impossible to delete any files you still want.

+A single Vista scheduled task now works with all connection types.

+Added a readme that should hopefully cover all of what the average user needs to know.

+Removed lots of unnecessary pauses in the code to make it run faster.

+Performed a slight visual update on the tray balloons, hopefully making them more useful and easier to understand.

+Lots of other minor tweaks and fixes here and there.

Please remove any old versions of NodEnabler (or any other ESET cracks you might be using) before installing version 3.0. "2.81 Improved" has it's own uninstaller. The uninstaller above should work with all versions prior to "2.81 Improved":

Will NodEnabler change the u/p only if it's not working? I've tried using NE, but the u/p doesn't change. And ESS warned me at a random time (some 5 minutes after installation) that something wants to change egui.exe (nodenabler, safe?). Anyways, I allowed that and tried running NE again, but it didn't change the u/p. I guess it does that only when necessary ?

This being the key sentence?

@shought

I have just scanned the box, mara fix 1.0 and the report says:

Number of scanned objects: 13

Number of infected items: 0

Number of cleaned objects: 0

ESET > F5 > Antivirus and antispyware > On-demand computer scan > ThreatSense engine parameter setup >

Selected profile: In-depth scan =

ESET > F5 > Antivirus and antispyware > On-demand computer scan > ThreatSense engine parameter setup > Setup > Objects =

Operating memory

Boot sector

Files

Archive

Self-extracting archive

Runtime packers

I have all above ticked, only Email files is NOT ticked.

ESET > F5 > Antivirus and antispyware > On-demand computer scan > ThreatSense engine parameter setup > Setup > Extensions =

Scan all files is ticked

Does this answer your question?

Other than NOT selecting ThreatSense.net and disabling PUA during install I have not altered any further settings in connection with how ESET scans/detects files. My suspicion is that ThreatSense.net AKA anti-medicine.net is perhaps the cause of this? ;)

Has anyone else tried NOT installing ThreatSense.net (from word go! NOT just switching it off AFTER install) and then see if ESET detects the new range of fixes from this site as a threat?

________

@mara-

I am glad you took time to find the loop ;) I have just received the 3985 (20090403) sigs and after a restart the loop is indeed broken :D

With the first restart after the sig update I got the error Bong, and this time for a split second saw the error window but it was not on screen long enough to read. Subsequent reboots are now error free. :)

As I said it was a clean OS install, and I am not a big believer in coincidences, for the error bong to appear after the loop was created by running your fix a 2nd time and then disappear after the loop was broken there HAS to be a connection! ;)

I have Unwanted applications on, you just said you have that off? I guess that's the problem :D

@shought

So perhaps some clarity could be given on the site that they are NOT seen as a virus but as a PUA? :D

But still it interests me what was trying to change egui.exe ?

Hello.

The problem is not with Windows Update.

I have duplicated my earlier experience. It appears that NOD32 .417 contacts Windows Security Center at 09:00 EST, on my computer. NOD32 has been unsuccessful in auto updates as I am offline. It communicates to Windows Security Center that it is out of date. I have enclosed the necessary screenshots illustrating the condition. When back online, an update of NOD32 solves the issue. No Windows updates, etc. carried out. I do not auto update windows, either, preferring to be notified. This issue did not take place on .314 mara-fix 1.5.

As for the installation issue, only on .417 from forum front page. None previously experienced. The hang took place after installation bar indicated installation complete, and computer left on for many minutes with activity light off. Actually, it was not hanging, but locked. That was the reason for hard booting. After booting with normal option, all was well and no errors were observed.

@chrisTM

Do you have NOD32 monitoring Windows Update?

I like many others choose to be the one that adds updates to my system so I never use Windows Update :D

Because of this ESET will always feel there is a problem with my pc so in relation to this ESET turns the tray icon orange (I have not used NOD32 4.x so I am unsure if the system updates warning colour is also orange in just the AV product?)

Have you tried switching off the part of NOD32 that monitors system updates?

ESET > F5 > Tools > System updates > Notify about missing updates from level: set this to 'No updates'

See if that helps?

In relation to your earlier post #957

"Once again, the installation from the front page download was sketchy, at least on my end. The installer hung at the end and I had to hard boot"

What do you mean by sketchy? ;)

I have never had an ESET install hang on me? ESET 4.x takes considerably longer than 3.x to install due to differences it has had to implement to please UAC in Vista / W7, and on a slow pc it can seem to take an age to install (it seems to take an age because it does! ;) LOL) so you just have to be patient :)

Cheers

Your trial version has expired - I could be wrong but I don't believe NodLogin works with a trial version (it requires a retail version)

NodEnabler vs NodLogin - Which is Better?

http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/2008/1...hich-is-better/

---------------------------------------

Well, I give my preference to Nodenabler . Why? - Because keys are provided from several servers and not just one as Nodlogin have.

About the article :- it`s old story.

NodLogin now also updates automatically and besides, you can schedule it the way you like to receive updates.
